Disappointing news for availability of New engines in 2012 E-class

According to the following article it does not look promising for new engines to be available on E-class (V6 or V8). Interestingly new V8 is available on the CL-class, don't know how it is coping with the bad gasoline mentioned in the article...

I literally *just* posted on another thread that I'm seriously considering waiting for the new engine in the E350 with the hope that it will be in the MY2012 car.

There's one bit in the article that is most relevant to this discussion:

"Mercedes will still sell the four- and six-cylinder engines in America, but simply without the lean-burn capabilities. One of these engines, called BlueDirect in the U.S., is the direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 which will make it across the 2012 C-Class, E-Class, M-Class, and SLK."

It's already confirmed in the 2012 C350 (and one other model, I believe). The new 3.5-liter is MBZs high-volume engine going forward, so I'm crossing my fingers that they get it into the E350 ASAP.

Although the BlueTec diesels were the first to come to the U.S., I don't think the 'Blue' nomenclature is exclusive to diesel engines.

I believe it refers more broadly to next-gen fuel & emission efficient engines.

The article states that MB will be offering the 302hp Direct Injection in the E350. It will just not have the new Lean Burn technology. No mention of the V8 but the article was also mentioning Lean Burn on the V8. Still may be a chance to get the new V8 just not Lean Burn.

Had a MB E 200 Wagon as a rental in germany some months ago. It had text "Blue Technology" printed on boths sides between front door ond fender.

I don't know what this all means. The car had a gasoline engine, at least, that is what I filled it up with three times and it worked fine. Someone told me it has electric motors too but I could not see anything pointing to that.

The car was kind of fast to be just two liter gasoline but I don't know for sure.

What does that mean (Lean Burn?) Is that the D/I? And does that mean that the new V6 won't get the better MPG's as it originally was stated to get?

The 2012 E Class sedan/wagon/coupe/cabriolet will have the new generation of V6 and V8 engines. Do not fear, it looks like they left behind a small part of the injection system due to fuel quality issues but it does not seem to have any effect on the power.

Lean Burn improves fuel efficency by 10% and reduces emissions. Requires cleaner gas than US has.

MBTAZ, you're the first person I've seen identify the new engine by its model number (M276)-- Do you have reliable sources telling you it will be in the 2012 E-class?

I'm hoping that you do because I'm leaning towards waiting for this thing.

Thanks,
Voy

It will be, I work for a dealer here in Orange County and the ordering should open up next month. We are ordering the new C350 with the new 302HP engine currently and E350s are coming up soon. Techs have already been to class about the M278 (4.6L TT V8) and I think M276 school is happening now or in the immediate future. We have the preliminary order guides for SLK and the C facelift and all signs point to the M276 in the cars so there is no reason it will not be in the 2012 E350.

I love you DCubed (in a very manly, fist-bump sort of way)

I'll be purchasing this car and keeping it "forever", so the new engine is important to me. Your information above makes me feel better about waiting a bit. I really appreciate your forthrightness.

This was (i believe) one of the reasons BMW had so many issues regarding their previous twin turbo engines..2008-2010 535ix's - I know several people who had their BMW engines stop working due to US gasoline - Smart move by MB to scrap that lean burn thing.. FYI the blue efficiency is merely a branding mercedes is using to denote their cars are highly efficient and clean, nothing more and its not to be confused with bluetec
It was at one point scrapped for US cars however that is not the case.
