gasoline prices

Regular gas here is 3.29 and premium (93 octane) is 3.79. This is for BP, but most stations are the same.
A few years ago, the difference was only 20 cents, but it has been gradually increasing.
What is the differential between regular and 93 octane where you are?
BTW, price here is reflective of the lowest gasoline taxes in the nation.
According to national BP, they do not set the price, the local stations and distributors do.

You have nailed the untold story. There is no longer any rhyme or reason to the pricing of various grades. Same with diesel. Until 2005, diesel was always at least $.50 less than regular gas. Diesel costs a fraction of what gasoline costs to refine. That it is now priced at or above gasoline is ridiculous. We are the only country in the world where diesel is price higher than gasoline. The oil companies are just raping us. Oh well.

Record high gas prices plus record high oil company profits, they do think we are stupid but the consumer is in a stranglehold. Only thing to do is buy ExxonMobil and Chevron stock.
And car companies make gas alternative or diesel models much more expensive than the regular gas engine models.

A BandAid

"NEW YORK (Reuters Today) - Oil prices crashed more than $8 to a four-month low on Thursday after the world's consumer nations said they would band together to aid the global economy by releasing emergency oil reserves for the third time ever.

Oil prices fell to their lowest since the eruption of Libya's civil war in February stemmed exports from the OPEC member, putting a strain on global oil supplies. The International Energy Agency said it would help ease the strain by releasing 60 million barrels of government-held stocks, immediately increasing global supply by nearly 2.5 percent.

The move shocked traders who had been expecting the IEA to give top exporter Saudi Arabia more time to make up for the supply shortfall following OPEC's failed meeting on June 8, when other members blocked Gulf efforts to hike output.

Brent crude futures for August plunged by more than $8 after the news, nearly its lowest intraday price since February 22. By 10:03 a.m. EDT it was down $7.41 at $106.80 a barrel, set for its biggest fall since a deep slump on May 5.

U.S. crude lagged the decline but still fell $5.20 to $90.21 a barrel, taking prices more than 20 percent below their early May peak at more than $114, the highest since 2008."

Although I only recently started tracking the price of diesel I do recall diesel once being noticeably cheaper than gasoline. However, things have changed greatly since 2005 with the advent of ULSD.I've read that ULSD costs a good deal more to refine than did the older type.I'd love to see reliable figures regarding the costs to produce a gallon of ULSD when compared to older diesel.Also,Europe...and I believe Canada as well...deliberately tax diesel at a much lower rate than gasoline whereas many states tax it at a *higher* rate.

Around here diesel is either the same as 93 octane Premium or even higher.

The Federal Government taxes on diesel are higher than gasoline.
The Federal tax on motor gasoline and diesel fuel increased to 18.4 and 24.4 cents, respectively, on October 1, 1997. The Federal tax on
gasohol increased to 13.3 cents on January 1, 2005.

If only it were true. Home heating oil is also diesel (chemically identical). It does not have the highway taxes, but yet it too is almost the same price as Highway diesel. It is simply rape. Plain and simple. If it helps you to sleep better thinking ULSD is "that" much more to refine, then I can only wish you sweet dreams. I have been driving diesels for close to 25 years. One does not need to look much further than the record profits (obscene profits) the Oil Companies are raking in. Maybe it is because of all the extra sulphur they have to sell?

They are always producing diesel. The onlything that differentiates home heating oil is the color of the dye they put in it. That home heating oil could be $4.09 a gallon is just insane. There is no reason other than rape that diesel in any form should cost more than regular gasoline.
