WEIRD STUFF #2

OK, here's another WEIRD STUFF:

With Keyless Go, and maybe other configurations, in addition to the normal sensor area on the door handle, which is simply a depressed rectangle the same color as the handle, there is a black rectangle at the rear of the driver door handle.

What is that black rectangle?

Point the tip of the key at "the black rectangle" and hold the UNLOCK button down.

Next, once you've had fun with that, point the tip of the key fob again and hold the LOCK button down. Alternately, instead of using the key fob, you can simply touch and hold the depressed rectangle on the handle.

Pages 94-95 Operator's Manual explains how the convenience opening and closing features work with the SmartKey. The black rectangle is the IR sensor.

Ah! I didn't know it was IR. I have Keyless Go so I close it up with the sensor spot.

Thanks for responding.

The IR can be used for Opening OR Closing all of the windows and the sunroof to air out the car on a hot day before you get into the vehicle. The method with KeylessGO is only for Closing the windows and sunroof.

Actually, you can open all windows without the remote if you have KEYLESS GO. Press and hold the depression on the handle for a second to lock the doors (even if they're already locked), then immediately pull the handle out about 1/4" and hold in that position - do not completely unlatch/open the door. All windows will lower, sunroof will open, and climate comfort driver's seat will activate (if equipped).

Yes it does...too bad you have to approach car from the driver side for it to work. Still, pretty cool.

I totally agree - my Lexus GS400 used to open from remote control distance - great when it was hot. Couldn't close remotely though, never quite figured out that logic.

It really is a worthless feature. I mean what is it intended to accomplish? Why would you want to walk right up the car and hold down the unlock and wait for the windows to roll down while standing in the heat when in less time you could get in the car, put AC on max and simultaneously hit all four window buttons to roll the windows down?? At least in the car you are sitting down with the AC on max instead of standing outside. Doesn't make any sense to me at all. They need to make the roll down feature work at remote distance and just get rid of the roll up feature.

I think it is meant for use when it's not 105 degrees in Phoenix . Other than that I have never used it in all the MBs I own other than to check out the feature.
