New E550 4Matic with vibration in steering wheel
Hi Everyone,
I am a proud owner of a 2011 E550 4Matic that still has under 1000 miles.
Over the course of the month that I have owned the car, I have noticed a slight vibration (more like a buzz or resonance) coming from the steering wheel and brake pedal. This only occurs after I have driven my car and come to a complete stop.
The vibration stops when I turn off the AC or while I'm driving. The car remains calm even when I turn the AC back on while still at the same stop. But when I accelerate and stop again, the vibration often returns.
Has anyone noticed this with their vehicle? Any guess on what this can be resulted to? The service department couldn't find anything and told me to add more mileage to the car so that they can check the engine codes and to let the computer learn my driving style (since it was still in "open loop"). I am doubtful that the problem will disappear and don't recall this behavior in the test car that I drove.
Thanks for any advise,
-Brian

Sorry if my description wasn't very clear but the vibration doesn't always occur when the AC is on. For instance, when I start the car, there is no vibration. Also when I'm at a stop and turn the AC off and then back on, there is no vibration.
The vibration only occurs when I accelerate and then come to a stop. It doesn't matter if the engine is still hot or cold.

I'm nearly 100% certain it is the AC compressor. I had the same issue when I first got my car. It was quite alarming when it occurred.
The AC is a complicated thing, so having the vibration stay away after turning it off and then back on might not mean much -- the compressor might not be working as hard when you turn it back on. But if the vibration goes away when you turn off the AC, well that's pretty good info.
I think maybe the vibration is strong now because your car is new. My car is now 1.5 years old with 12K miles, and the vibration for the most part is gone. Sometimes I will feel it when the weather is really hot and humid, but nothing like when I first bought my car.

I suppose I asked to see if others were experiencing this problem or whether this was a issue about MB's quality control. AC compressor certainly can be the culprit but also curious if it could be related to other possible components such as the alternator, harmonic balancer, engine misfiring, voltage regulation, timing, etc. Certainly, those components could have an impact when the engine is at idle and under load.
Hopefully, the service department will address the issue when I bring it back in a few weeks. Thanks for the feedback so far...and good to know that the problem could fade over time.

Well I brought my car in for a 2 tire bubble fix resulting from a single pothole (3 tires in 4 months) and mentioned this problem regarding slight vibration in steering wheel when braking. Service attributed it to warped rotors and replaced rotors and pads. I was sort of thinking it had to do with the braking system.
