Loud Idling

How loud is this car supposed to idle?

I have an e550 that seems to idle pretty loudly outside (I assume from the v8), which I don't mind but at stop lights I can still slightly hear the engine running.

Most new cars, even my old 98 corolla when it was new idled dead silent when at a red light. Sometimes you would wonder if the car shut off.

Anyone else have this issue?

Let's see, twice as many cylinders as your Corolla, and much bigger ones. Such mechanical stuff as variable valve timing and hard-working injection stuff. Exhaust that's "tuned" to sound good.<G> A much bigger, louder fan.

I was expecting the cabin to be a little more isolated from the motor than that. Even the newest BMW X5 was pretty silent at idle.

I agree with MCD007. The cabin of an E-Class should be silent at idle.

hmmmm....I'm coming up on 14K miles on mine, and have never noticed anything odd....and I constantly scan for 'sounds' and 'creaks' and stuff you know?
especially from under the hood and exhaust area.....
I think it sounds good.....it's kind of a different machine from bmw huh?

welcome

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. I had the same issue in my 2005 E320 and S500, it turned out to need a nice tune up. Yours is obviously newer so maybe you got a bad batch of spark plugs or something.

I would get all new spark plugs and wires, about $600.

If you're hearing it in the cabin, it's most likely coming through the firewall area.

PS- I love the sound deadening you did!
