2012 E350 Wagon, 2011 VW GTI
Panorama roof

Cheers everyone,

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2012 E350 wagon. Can't decide on whether or not to get the panorama roof. My only concern is that there is no sunshade and the kidos may get too much glare. Curious to hear why you did or did not get the panorama roof. Also, does this add a lot of weight to the car?

Regards,

Ed

Inside the car there is a power retractable sunshade that eliminates any sun from entering the cabin. So concern #1 solved. Was on the car I liked. Would I order it. Yes. Why. Makes roof line smooth and elegant. Weight. Marginal at best.

My kid has never been bothered by the sun in my sedan. In the sedan the shade is partially see-through but no issues.

Don't use mine during the day, but always drive at night with it open. I like it...

I have two cars with it and I will never buy another car without it. I love it.

This issue has been discussed before

Lots of pics and discussion that might be useful.

hmmm, I'd be concerned with a wagon and the extra glass up there.....
just in case there was ever any upper luggage involved you know?
I'd probably muck it up somehow, but I'm sure the view from inside would be
awesome

I'd rather have a car with it, and it's pro's are very notable and obvious (more elegant lines/structure points on the roof, full glass display, smoother and more "expensive" operation and sound when operating, etc.)

I'll point out the cons I noticed between my 2010 W212 with Pano, and my 2011 W212 without it:

Structure of the non-Pano car feels a little bit tighter, less flex-noise when going over bumps/up driveways (actually, no flex noise with standard roof), you can kind of feel the lighter weight (Pano adds probably anywhere from 80-200 lbs right over your head), people have reported more ambient/wind noise with Pano (it hasn't been too noticeable to me), sunshade does't completely cover out the sun (wasn't an issue to me), and it looks hideous when open (the big glass just goes over the rear portion, looking really funny). Also, you have the inevitable creaks (mine got them at about 8K Miles, fixed when I took it to service and they lubed it), and more that can go wrong. Also, I'd wager in a hard crash, a non-Pano car would be a safer bet.

Finally, in conclusion, I'd still say that I recommend Pano, especially on a Luxury Cruiser.

All has been covered very well and I'd say it comes down to personal preference. My only addition is a small CON in that you cannot "vent" the sunroof without having the shade completely open. Compared to the normal glass sunroof, which allows venting with the shade closed. I

2011 E350
When we ordered our E350 last year, we contemplated on the pano or standard sunroof as well. The only downside to the pano is that the power sunshade, at least on the sedan, is a see-through mesh material so it doesn't block off the sunlight completely. This wasn't very attractive for us especially when parked outdoors here in sunny SoCal.

I read that the W211 pano had a solid sunshade which many liked. Maybe the 2012 W212 may get this change, who knows.

I hope so because the current shade is completely unacceptable. Shame on you MB.
