Remember that contrary to the US (where people love to turn on the fogs in clear weather) European law requires the rear fog to be used when visibility is under 50 meters (@50 yards) and a ticket is issued if the fog light is used in better visibility. Since the fog is intended to be used when the other lights aren't visible, the single fog identifies the driver's side of the car.
You are correct; my statement didn't take right-hand drive vehicles into consideration but the principle is the same.

And yes it drives me bonkers when people have their fog lights on when not needed. Especially at dusk or dawn it irritates my eyes. For some reason the majority of the previous generation Audi A4 drivers had their rear fog lights on in my town. This leads me to believe that the Audi rear-fog lights were too easy to turn on and were often confused with the regular lights. I've never owned the previous model A4 before so I can't say this for a fact; just an observation on my part.

The Audi story is funny. Prior to 2002, Audi's only had the driver's side activated. They had so many complaints in the US about "burned out light bulb" that they put the passenger side in. Now you have the Audi drivers joining the Jaguar and Range Rover drivers driving down the road with two blazing light on the back.

I'm sure that breaking those lights out with a baseball bat would be justifiable road rage

A few different ones
The hockey sticks/day time running lights in my car are always on ... when I push that button in the circle next to the light switch it turns on the rear fog light ...

I never really considered the hockey sticks fog lights ...

P2 equipped cars don't have true fog lights...in fact, no 2012 cars have true front fog lights. 2011 cars with the four round lights up front (sorry guys, I noticed many W212 today and have to say the four rounds look much better than the hockey stick or straight LEDs) have true front fog lamps. Too bad you can't get bixenon with the four round fog lamps up front.

When I got my 2010, base and P1 came with four round lights. I much prefer them to the LED "sticks." Only thing I don't like is that I cannot turn my fog and DRL's on at the same time. This may be unique to cars made in late 2009 as the light switch is also different.
For info, two of round lights are fog and two are DRL's.
One thing I did early on was to park in front of a closed business that had windows down almost to the ground. Then I played with the light switches to see what was coming on when and how they looked.

I think you are incorrect here. My W212 wagon is 2012 with a P2 package. It has the straight LED lights that function as DRL's. That switch that the OP refers to is my fog-light. Whenever I use it, the LED lights (DRL)s is turned off and the center (inner lights) becomes brighter - effectively functioning as a fog light. The car may not have the fog lights under the headlamps (typical of most cars) because the LED lights were placed there but the fog lamp function still exists.

wish i had this button on my 2010 w212...makes it easy to control the LED fogs...versus playing around with the convenience menu from the steering wheel buttons.

Not sure, but I was under impression that cars with bi-xenon headlights did not have fog lights. Theory is that the bi-xenons function well enough that fogs are not needed.

Just FYI in California Rear Fog lamps may only be used when visibility is less than 500ft. CVC make no referance to the use of the front Lamps.

My car does not have fog lights. when I originally wrote the thread I was blanking on DTRLs so I wrote "fog lights" instead. I think we figured out some oddities of the lights and I learned a few things about rear fogs and their purpose.

Thanks for all the input

I guess the thread is still going...
On the topic of lighting, I found out a way to keep the LED's at their brightest setting on when the car is off. I was washing my car today, the radio turned off, so I turned on the car while I finished quick waxing the car. Since it was only 3 PM and the sun was out, the LED DRL's came on. When the battery was charged up again, I went through the passenger door and turned the car off, but didn't remove the key fob. I moved it to position 2 and closed the passenger door. The car was off, but the LED's were still on! I even opened the driver's door while the key was in ignition 2 and the lights stayed on even though the car was off! Pretty cool actually... The LED's only stay on if I go through the passenger side door.

I still do not understand what the two parking lights on the left of the dial do.. I put the dial on either one of those, use the turn signals, nothing ever happens.. It just flashes the turn signals and doesnt light up either side of the car. Am I doing anything wrong?

1) Turn off the engine
2) Switch the light knob to the parking light
3) Choose: pointing left for left and pointing right for right
4) Get out of the car and look at your rear right
5) Smile and be thankful.

the short answer is: that button is for fog lights.

if you have P2 in the states, your car comes with intelli lighting system, which includes full LED signal lights, brake lights, and xenon, and LED daytime running lights. hocky sticks are daytime running lights, and NOT fog lights. the above fog light button when pressed will turn your xenon headlights' angle downward, then your headlights will function as fog lights.

you're correct!

and pressing the "fog light button" in this case will turn your bi-xenon downward which allows your bi-xenon function as fog lights.

So the fog light switch overrides the low/high beam settings??? (2011 e350 P2). Does it lower the lights below the low beam setting? how does it interact if you have your lights set to automatic?

More info please....
