Ashtray replacement?

All I ever do with the ashtray is put coins or my cel in there. Does anybody make a replacement tray without the sharp put-out-the-butt thing?

I searched but could not find one.

You can easily remove the metal insert from the ashtray.

Pop the tabs on the back of the metal thing then just use some sticky felt to line the tray for your coins

Easy! The chrome edge came right off in one piece. No need to line with anything, it's full of coins anyway.

I pulled the cigarette holder off as soon as I got my car and put it in the trunk. Had lots of coins in "box" that was left and never heard them, but eventually lined the "box" with felt I got from Target.
M-B really needs to get away from standard ashtray and lighter. Make it a dealer installed option for the 15% of population that still smokes -
Toyota does.

+1. I never understood why they make the ashtray standard instead of making it a coin holder. And thanks to all who mentioned how to remove the insert!

And another +1 here. I too removed the chrome cigarette thingy from the ashtray on day one when I received my vehicle and put the ashtray back since the empty space since it looked like it needed somthing to finish it off.
On my W211 vehicle, there was a rubber mat that you could buy and put in the same place as the ash tray. I looked around and found that there's one for the W212 and it's this part (item 5). This was a pain in the a__ to find and you'd think they'd make it a little easier to find.
Will take pics when I get it and replace the ashtray.

Wouldn't it just be easier to start smoking?

A far greater percentage of Europeans smoke than is the case here in the US.Given that Europe is MB's single most important market it makes sense (to me at least) that the "smoker's package" would be standard.

So very true. And, they have lower incidences of lung cancer than us too. The French in particular have it figured out completely: They eat rich creamy food, drink lots of wine, have lots of sex, and smoke Gitanes. Throw in a good sound system and I say "smoke'm if ya got'em".

With the price of cigs these days, I might have to drop down to regular gas.

Point taken. I wonder if a "non-smoker's package" is an option if you special order?

Finally got my rubber ashtray replacement mat today. I've included pictures of both the install (looks the same as HBerman's) and the bag it came in showing the part number for those interested in purchasing one.
I will say that if you like to put change in the ashtray and are interested in continuing to do so, then I'd stick with the other options posted here; ie., remove the chrome cigarette thingy and continue to use the ashtray as it will better hold the coins with less sloshing around as you move about. I say this because the rubber mat sits fairly low in the opening and there's some openings forward and aft of it that will allow smaller coins to collect in. You can see them in the picture and when you remove the ashtray.
However, if you'd like the opening to put cell/smartphones, wallet and larger things then you might like to go the rubber mat route as it does provide for a little more volume than with the ashtray.

Can someone please re-post the part number for the OEM rubber insert for the ashtray? The old links are not working. Need this for '14 E350 wagon. Thanks.

Thanx to all. I'm going to see if my dealer can get it. I have bought before from ECS but this one is so small that the shipping is 2x the product price!
