Regular Tires on E350 BlueTec

First, in Europe, the car has W-rated summer tires. After going through lots of reviews we ended up with Firestone Wide Oval Indy 500s. Bizarre name. But it turns out an excellent Bridgestone tire. Great ride, low noise, excellent handling.
Just as they wore out the second generation came out, it has been even better. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....+Oval+Indy+500
Since then Conti has some higher performance tires, the ExtremeContact DW, that may be comparable. It is hard to tell since there are few back-to-back owners. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....remeContact+DW
The Firestone is considered Ultra High Performance and the Conti is considered Max Performance by Tire Rack. However...it is hard to tell.
We have been using the Michelin Pilot Alpine and then Primacy Alpine when the Pilot Alpine stopped coming in the right size. These are H-rated handle well, and are not much different from the Firestones in ride and noise. We have the tires mounted and balanced on the original rims, generally running snows from just after Thanksgiving to the beginning of April.
Note: newer models have 17" wheels with more tire options. However, MB rates the car for XL tires where there are few options in that size. In SL there are a broad range of options. The 16" was an SL.
Note 2: The Michelin Super Sport comes in the 17" size. It is the current leader in high performance street tires and an option. More expensive and undoubtedly harder and noisier (but still acceptable) than the picks above.
