Ps2 a/s uneven wear

is anyone else having uneven wear with their Michelin ps2 a/s tires on the rear.

The center rib of both rear tires are worn to the nub while the inner and outer side walls on both tires are in great shape.

This is an overinflation pattern but I keep my pressures within specs.

I came across a bimmer board saying there is a manufacturing problem with these tires which Michelin have not corrected across all sizes.

What do you mean by "This is an overinflation pattern but I keep my pressures within specs"?

If you talk about the pressure recommendation on the car then just forget it. Pressure recommendation on the car is just a guide line. Real pressure need comes from the load on the can AND from the tire itself.

If your tire is wearing faster in the middle it just is what it is, i.e. you have too much air in the tires.

When you say "within specs" which specs are you using? And how many miles are on the tires?

Do not use the placard at the driver's door as your guide. Instead, use the pressures posted inside the gas cap door. They are for real world driving and will most likely be significantly lower pressures than the driver's door placard. With the gas cap pressures as your starting point, you can adjust pressures as needed according to load, although they should be adequate for most normal driving conditions.

If you, like most of us, live in a climate with seasonal temperature changes, make sure you adjust the air pressure to maintain the gas cap pressure recommendations. You probably already know this, but cold > hot temps. can make a considerable difference in internal tire pressures.

You may also want to discuss it with Michelin.

I'd like to know how this turns out.

Good luck.

What up Hyperion. Arent you running ps2 a/s? When the mob meet up.
The mb club in north va does auto crosses but I can't imagine running the e550 in one

Thanks for your insight benzman and arrie
I've kept the rear between 36-40 psi. I don't have any unusual loads - i apologize to the hov advocates, but it's usually just me in the car with an empty back seat. I've used 2 tire pressure gauges to make sure ones not faulty.

Benzman, I've sent a note to michelin, I'll let you know if anything comes of it.

For the next tire, I'll probably go back to contiprocontacts. Pirelli are too loud and conti dws summer traction is considerably subpar.

Tires have roughly 15000 mi (could be off by 5k).

I am not a fan of the PS2. Got maybe 10K miles out of them - rear pair.
I now have General G-Max AS-03 - 10 miles later and everything is well.

OK. Thank you.

I'm ignorant of what the suggested inflation range for the E550 sedan is, as posted on the gas cap. But if 36-40 is your measured cold pressure, you can easily run 39-43 when warm. From my own experience (with different tires) the high end of that is high enough to cause your symptoms within 15,000 miles. Just speculation on my part though.

One thing for sure, going down to the minimum recommended pressures would most likely increase ride comfort.

Good luck.

I swapped the michelin ps2 a/s today for contriprocontact tires on the rear.
I thought my alignment was going to be out but it wasn't. On closer inspection of the tires, there was also severe wear on the inner most margin with sparing of the outer 1/3 and inner 1/3.

Bizzare. The dealer couldn't give a clear reason why this wear pattern occured.

I am happy to be back with the contiprocontacts though. Good news about them is the treadware on the rear tires is 400 -- when I bought my car in 2010 these same tires had a treadware in the 200's. Glad continental made this change, as long as it won't significantly affect performance.

That really is bizarre wear. Glad you're rolling again with good rubber.

FYI, my last Benz had the Conti's in 16 size." You'll of course get many differing opinions on tires here but, mine were in use for 10 years, got almost 25K miles and no dry rot, cracks, etc. Hope yours do as well for you.

Good luck.
