I can't participate, 'cause you don't have an "all of the above".

Don

Sorry we need to pick one. I think safety although apparently is reliable according to the research I've found. I hope I'm lucky enough for my deliverd car to be reliable.

Prestige would have been a nice option to chose from as well.

You didn't put "design" or "style" in there, which would be my #1, so I went with "Quality" which could be a universal description of a few things (Design quality, build quality, heritage quality, etc.).

2012 e350 wagon
all of the above, plus it is the only full sized AWD wagon you can still get in the USA. I love Audis, and we wanted to trade up to an A6...but no dice. Now thrilled with the MB.

Prestige and Style

Presetige and style are my two primary reasons. MB reliability, even for the E Class, is pretty low for the price and class of the car. Hard to separate quality and reliability.
When I consider a car I look at both exterior and interior styling equally. For me, the E Class does both extremely well.

What do you mean reliability is pretty low? The 2012 has the top reliability by JD power. True delta it is high too. This is over comparable cars in its class like the GS350, 535, M37, Jaguar, A6, A7, etc.

MB E class dropped to average in Consumer Reports for reliability and most MB's are below avearge.
have to take CR with a grain of salt, but same with JD Power, True Delta, etc. CR does have the largest pool for surveys and sends out a very comprehensive survey.
I have been surveyed by JD Powers and place no faith at all in their ratings for reliability.
The US News reliability report you cited is based on JD Power's Predicted reliability for 2012.
MB may be better than other in its class, but for what all these cars cost, they should all be much higher in reliability.

Yeah I understand what you are saying. This mid-sized and full-sized have alot more tech that has less road history/testing. Higher chance of breakage. I just checked the 2010 report of the GS (did not have 2011) to that of the 2011 e350 AWD on CR. Overall the e class is AVERAGE overall while the GS is BELOW AVERAGE overall!

The E-Class continuously comes in at the top of its Class in reliability rankings, with M-B brand rising to the top of Luxury Car manufacturers (in fact, it's back toward the top of all car manufacturers).

Name one car that's rated as "more reliable" in its class than the E? I know you won't say the 5-Series who's first couple years have been almost W211-intro disasters in terms of common complaints, nor the A6 who's part of Audi brand who's pegged toward the bottom of most reliability ratings charts (as is BMW now), or the previous GS which wasn't known to uphold "Lexus' quality" in terms of squeaks and rattles galore inside, etc.

Well, regardless of what the fine folks at Consumers may say, my particular E has been fantastic. In my case they "promised me a Mercedes Benz" and they delivered. I tend to be pretty rough on cars. I drive about 25K miles per year, and, reliability is a major consideration for me. This is my first MB, but, based on my experience so far (36K mi. in 18 months) it will not be my last. Prior to my E bluetec, the car that had earned my number one spot was a 2004 VW Passat TDI. I had heard nightmare stories about VW reliability but drove the car and purchased it anyhow. The Passat provided me 130K absolutely trouble free miles. I replaced the timing belt at 80K miles and the original brake pads at 102K. I got 52K miles on the original tires and 64K on the second set. I think that "most" newer cars today are vastly more reliable than cars were even 10 years ago. So, when you see ratings today, someone has to finish lower, relative to other vehicles, but there is little difference statistically between a car that has 1.9 problems per 100 vehicles and a car that has 1.4 problems per 100 vehicles. There are three types of lies: 1) Lies 2) Damn Lies 3) Statistics.

There is no way. You'll be lucky to get 50k on good brakes of all highway driving.

I agree, prestige is most important option you missed. MB never was safe, reliable, performance, or quality car, but it had prestige.

Okay, is it just me or am I way off track in raising the flag! How do you propose such an elite car maker gets such high "prestige" marks??? Apparently wasn't evident in the several "PRESTIGE" posts here, right? I mean, are you really saying people all over the world are really that stupid? Prestige, based on how well (and successful) the M-B brand has been engineered, cultivated and produced, is the one primary factor in ensuring and locking in return-buyers! Consumers wouldn't go back to "have another" if it sucked to begin w/ or if they had a bad experience owning one! Come on, really??? I could rant on and on, but I'll leave it @ that... Anyone else like to chime in here???
