Just got back from a trip from Detroit.Filled up there and filled up when we got home...746 miles on 19.824 gallons, cruise set at 71 (when possible),A/C always on (almost 100 degrees),two people with luggage. The drive was 97% highway with the rest being slowdowns at the border,a couple of stops, some construction and a few miles of suburban driving. That comes out to just under 800 miles on a tankful.

Now that, is freaking sweet! That is what I like to see...37.5 MPG!

Pretty brave using up 19.86 gallons...last two fill ups I only got in 19.3 gallons and that was after the super low fuel warning was on for a bit.

Bah! My mileage is going lower and lower, I'm sure because now that the car is broken in (~1400 miles) I am not babying it quite as much as I was in the first 1000 miles but my last tank I got 482 miles out of 20.20 gallons which is an average of 23.9 MPG. Previous fill up was 24.1 MPG and previous before that was 24.8 MPG. On the bright side, I filled up for $3.42/gallon compared to $3.56/gallon 2 weeks ago. Sam's Club has diesel fuel for $3.22/gallon but it wasn't on my route.

I'm doing a road trip to Las Vegas next week, 554 miles round trip, I full expect to be able to do it on one tank of fuel with a few gallons left when I get back.

Pardon my question, but why would the person buying brand new MB be so much concerned with gas mileage ?
I am in Canada and these vehicles are pretty pricey here. In my 15 years in automotive business in Canada, I have not heard anyone here with brand new MB, BMW, Porsche or Audi complaining about gas mileage. Ford, GMC or Chrysler, yes I've heard some complains... What am I missing ?

Igor.

More of a hobby than anything...I've got a fascination with fuel efficiency and all that, hence the diesel Mercedes. It's like a personal goal to get the most mileage of out each tank, has nothing to do with cost savings really.

I think many of us are in the same boat. Same goes for the VW TDI drivers. You could obviously get a much more economical car overall cost of service but there is something to be said for the luxury we have with the great MPG. If it was about pure economy I probably would have gone for the Passat TDI, or i guess Hyundai or something?

For me it's partially a hobby of sorts combined with a white hot hatred of OPEC and one or two other oil producing nations (no,not Canada ).Yes,I could afford to spend more on gas (as can most here,I suspect) but there's something emotionally satisfying in getting high mileage.

Thanks for taking time to answer my question. I got the drill - I was not missing anything and this is what I wanted to hear.

To all responses - thanks to you all, I now learned that there is a new hobby around

31.8 MPG?!? I hate you!

Seriously though, that is impressive. I am so far from that it's not even funny. I checked out your Fuelly profile and it looks like your mileage has gotten quite a bit better. Has your driving style or commute changed or the car started getting better mileage with age? Looks in you were getting 24-25 MPG in March/April last year and now high 20s/mid 30s.

Finished the road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas and ended up going 557.4 miles on 18.96 gallon for an average of 29.4 MPG. This was with 4 adults and a trunk full of luggage. Really I was hoping for better, though there was a bit of elevation change and having all the weight in the car didn't help.

The trip computer was much more optimistic, showing 33.0 MPG with an average speed of 67 MPH.

I would be happy with that, considering 4 adults, luggage, hill climbing and the A/C working hard in the desert.

I can agree with your number. Of course I have done better with 2 persons aboard with A/C on.

I've used mine mostly for longer trips, the longest from home to Texas and back with luggage and two persons. I'm averaging consistently at 39 mpg. I did much the same in European traffic when I picked it up and thought maybe my conversion arithmetic was bad. The car does better than my bladder!!!

I suspect that the fuel usagesensor is somewhat inflating those numbers. I have driven for hours at 75/80 mph on the interstate, filled up and can't get above 36mph.

Are you calculating based on fuel pump gallons used to fill the car or are you using the in-car measurement. One of those is accurate

Mileage from last fill-up divided by the gallonage indicated on the pump. The sensor usually indicates mid 30's. In the case of the trip to Texas I drove 2200 miles. Fueled once in Arizona just north of Phoenix, once in El Paso, Texas, and on the return, in Gallup, New Mexico; speeds in the 70's most of the way.

Great fill today:

644 miles on the tank, it took 19.3 gallons for 33.4mpg.

That was two round trips home-office, and one one-way. Pretty much all highway, but with a healthy dose of traffic and NYC in there.

Yeah, I'm bragging because Fuelly now has me at 31.4 average mpg over 4400 miles tracked.

Jeepers, I love this car. Momma is complaining it's too small, anyone have an S Class Bluetec? I wonder if it's underpowered. The E certainly isn't.

Just a comment... I drove my 2012 E350 from Tampa to Augusta. 490 miles on cruise 90% of the time doing 70 on interstate 75. I used a little less than 3/4 of a full tank. However when I ride around town, its efficiency is much worse...

I just drove another 2200 miles, actually 2263, from California, thru Nevada, Idaho, Yellowstone Park to north east Wyoming. Most was highway, and mountains leaving California and through Yellowstone. Except through Yellowstone my speed was between 70 mph and no more than 120mph, mostly around 80 mph. I averaged 37.33 for the entire trip, a bit less than the last trip but I attributed that to higher speeds and climbs through mountains. I was also quite aggressive using the paddle shifters through the hilly curves in and out of Yellowstone. I don't use the car at all for local or city driving.

It's a helluva car. Too bad I'll be giving it up and replacing it with a BlueTec GLK250 when they come out next Spring. It's just too much car for my use and not quite utilitarian enough for my lifestyle.

I've had this 2012 BlueTec for 10 months and I love it more and more. I even like turbine smooth engine sound, of course fuel mileage as well.

I envious of you about 2 things. 1. being able to take the E350 up to 120mph. 2. about owning a 190d. Is it it the 2.2 or the 2.5 or 2.5 turbo? believe it or not that was my dream car in high school.

Regarding the OP, i will post official stat later but my wife has been driving the E350 more and more in almost purely stop/go and we are still averaging high 20s with the occasional high way drive on the tank.

The GLK250 is an interesting proposition if it happens. Will be interested to see the MPG against our ML320...

It's a 2.2 which I've owned since new. Has 137K miles on it now. I loved it when I bought it for my wife in '85 and when she died a couple of years ago I kept it and got rid of everything else. I've been renovating, upgrading and fixing little things ever since. Everything works as new. I absolutely love the car. Still prefer it to anything else.
