I remember when the W220 came out in 4matic is was a no charge option on both the S430 and S500. I think when you get to that car its more of a preference as I imagine even in snowy climates some people would never plan to drive those cars in the snow. Doesn't really seem fair though, like the non-4matic drivers still absorb the cost of 4matic...but anyway...

They probably figured with the "free" AMG package they can make that money many times over with the cost incurred by customers to replace the fragile low profile wheels that fail...

Icanectc, I heard the C300 is still being offered for 2013, but now with a de-tuned version of the 3.5 liter motor. Hear is what I found:
C-Class Sedan & Coupe (on-sale: July 2012)
C250 Coupe & Sport/Luxury Sedan: direct-injection 1.8-liter 4-cylinder turbo (201 hp,229 lb.-ft.)
C300 4MATIC Sport/Luxury Sedan: new direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 generating 248hp and 251 lb-ft of torque (previously 228 hp/221 lb-ft) including new ECO Start/Stop
and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
C350 Coupe & Sport Sedan: New ECO Start/Stop on direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 (302 hp, 273 lb.-ft.). Available 4MATIC all-wheel drive on coupe.
C63 AMG Coupe & Sedan: features hand-built naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V8 (451 hp,
443 lb-ft), AMG 7-speed MCT and 18-inch twin 5-spoke alloy wheels. Optional AMG Development Package yields 481 hp.

Good or bad, they need to let us the owners have the choice of turning it off. I mean saving the environment in exchange of wear and tear on starter motor is nice and all, but there are instances where you want instant acceleration, like making a right turn in front of an oncoming 18 wheeler. If the engine stopped there and the car hesitated because engine needs to be restarted, it could be a hairy situation.
I drive a Cayenne and I ALWAYS leave the start/stop function disabled. Porsche's system is pretty intelligent where it knows which cylinder to fire next to get the engine started. But even that it can be a safety problem in situation mentioned above.
I predict BMW will be facing a class action lawsuit very soon, and they will be forced to put in a disable switch on all their 2012's.

The new 3-Series I drove had an annoying Stop/Start. When I gave it gas to take off quickly, the whole car sputtered and sounded like it stalled out.... in reality, it was just the starter struggling to catch on to my quicker reaction time than it's capable of processing (I wasn't even being THAT aggressive).

With Porsche, once you turn it off it remains off. In a Porsche it's basically an 'on' button instead of a 'off' button.
Porsche designers know that the customer's enjoyment and safety takes priority over being forced to remember to have to turn an intrusive system off. So they designed their stop/start system with an 'on' button.
And don't forget: stop/start is not about customer's saving fuel or 'saving' the environment. It's simply a very low cost technology that allows auto manufacturers to squeeze out one or two mpgs so that their overall fleet of models will comply to CAFE rules and emissions regulations. They aren't thinking about the consumer.

I have stop/start on my Cayenne Turbo and find it to be acceptable especially in city stop and go driving. I don't mind it too much and in fact welcome the nice start-up growl (with catbypass). With the "Sport" button depressed it is deactivated.

Hey 220, haven't heard from you in a long while. I miss your well informed commentary. Time to get back into a Benz. You will soon tire of an all P-car diet.
Best regards

Where's the E63? And another AMG already? You're going thru AMGs like Henry VIII went thru wives Hype, I think you need a Black Series next
Take care and stay well.
