Mercedes: Worst back up camera out there?

BAckup camera is essential. The guidelines are a crutch. The backup camera for me is to achieve maximum close ness to the car im parallel parking in front of without bumping it; or to leave a spot.
To notice a pedestrian behind you before engaging, etc. It isnt a perfect screen that negates the need to turn your head 90 or 180 degrees still..... but definitely has eased my pain considerably. gladly pay for p1 again

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
Between the 2014 e class rear cam and my 360, I think it's awesome
Just wish there was option for wide angle as I have in the Acura... Very very helpful to see who is approaching yur reversing vehicle tangentially

Is there is one thing that irks me about the E350, it's the backup camera.
Don't get me wrong, it's better than no camera for sure, but why did they go with a fisheye lens and why aren't there any guide lines like other cars have? I find it very hard to judge both the distance behind the car and the width of the car itself.
I don't think it would have been terribly difficult to have some guide lines on the screen, even if they don't move with the steering wheel like they do in an Audi.

Hmmm... lets see?!? This thread was created in 2012... I wonder how many drivers has a 2014 E Class in 2012? What do you think?
Wow... really?

It would be nice if the lines were available through a software/firmware update. I don't need the lines honestly, I make an effort to actually look behind me when backing up. It only annoys me that I have a 2013, the lines are offered on the 2014's, and they can't do anything about it.

I think new models have different equipment too. Mine has the standard single camera lens near the license plate. Works damn fine as long as you also look with your mirrors. Helps me immensely i must say. Ive seen the Infiniti G37 system where it has the guidelines and track showing you where the wheel is going to take you...
honestly. the germans arent menu people. Asians make good menus. RPGS, websites... you know... Germans just, ah... At least theyre unique systems and not copy pasted like a steam engine fps clone... Theres some comfort in that.
And i think the rear view cam is quite useful for being included with the P1 pack. bmws pay xtra

But I still roll the window down and stick my head out to look back with mine own eyes for the final placement!

I have backup and 360 camera on my 14 and I think it is great, certainly better than BMWs, IMO. I always liked BMW's 360 cameras. But their system does not show top view and backup view side by side, making their 360 camera less useful.
Personally, a very good rear cross traffic detection (with motion sensing) would make any crappy backup camera much more useful. Too bad all German luxury makers are very slow to adopt this. I think 17 E Class has it though.

Interesting how we get used to so many things and then demand that the implementation be state of the art. Sure, its nice to have the latest and greatest. Maybe I'm just stuck in a time warp. I grew up in an era when only Lincolns and Cadillacs had power windows; when power steering, power brakes, AC and an AM radio were options.
I'm thrilled to have a back up cam. I don't have the guidelines but somehow I manage.

I had active guidelines in my G37, but am content without them in the E (although puzzled as to why my newer, higher end car doesn't have any type of guidelines whatsoever). I still use the mirrors (passenger side tilt down is great) and look out the windows and pretty much only use the camera to know how far back I can go (maybe MB didn't incorporate guidelines to encourage this behavior -- using the mirrors). Also have the parking sensors, which I also don't care about, but they're useful in a pinch, like this weekend when I almost plowed into an IS300 lol.

I have a question about the back up camera in my 2013 E350. When I put the car in reverse, the camera only comes on if the screen is already on because of another use (radio, etc.). If I turn off the radio and the screen goes black, the camera does not come on when I put the car in reverse. Is this normal?

Normal. Moreover, I don't see any reason to turn off the screen. I leave mine on all the time. When I had the car serviced one time, the technician turned the screen off, and when I picked the car up, I at first thought the screen had malfunctioned.
