USB port and what's this?

Owner's manual says USB port is in glove box....is it the jack hole in the picture and I assume I'll need an MB cable? And what's this round white plastic knob thing to the right? When you rotate it there is a hole uncovered that goes through the glove box top.

Thats for the Air Conditioning. It keeps the glove compartment cool. Turn in the air and turn the knob to adjust the amount of air blowing in there.
If you buy your wife chocolate after dinner it can be a place to keep them cool or whatever.

My MB cable is in the compartment between the seats.

My Bluetec came with one cable....a split one featuring an iPhone adapter and a standard 3.5 inch female port. There's a seperate cable (about $50 at the dealer) has a USB port.

Visited the dealer and they had no 3.5mm male to usb female cable. All I have is the 3.5mm jack in the glovebox.

That's because the signals are incompatible. The 3.5mm jack is to connect to an analog output from any audio device; ie., a headphone jack with left and right audio channels. Use this with the output from anything from your old walkman to any new device's headphone jack output. Bear in mind that you will not be able to control the device from the COMAND interface other than adjust volume.
USB is a digital interface that carries both digital signals as well as 5v power lines. Use this with memory sticks or other devices loaded with songs in supported format (ie, mp3, see manual, etc), and COMAND will play them with limited functionality as well as volume adjustment.
Hope this helps.

Can you keep the champagne chilled in there?

Thanks for your interest. Where do I contect the USB device? There's no USB port that I can find. There's only the 3.5 mm jack in the glove box. The audio unit has a PCMCIA...16 bit...slot. Do I get a PCMCIA card that outputs to USB? Will a 32 bit card work (backward compatible?)?

I bought the USB port for my Bluetec soon after taking delivery. The dealer had it in stock and it was about $50.Can't recall the part # but the dealer should be able to determine what's required and could order it...assuming it wasn't in stock. Also, after getting the part # from the dealer you might find it (cheaper, probably) on ebay or even Amazon.

Addendum: I just searched "Mercedes USB cable" on ebay and got a couple of hits that look like the one I got from the dealer...and they're less than what I paid.It might be wise, however,to confirm models...years...and part numbers before ordering.

My cable's in the glove box and completely detaches from its connection point. It takes a bit of twisting of the wrist to detach it IIRC (haven't done it in a while).Your setup might be different...I know they can change that kind of stuff even in the middle of a model year's production.

I can't find a port either in the glove box or center console. All I have is the 3.5 mm jack in the glove box. The dealer brought out all the cables that were shown in the parts book and none of them had a 3.5 mm connector and I agree with tjkaz that it is probably an aux input anyway. Does your audio unit have a PCMCIA card slot below the volume knob? I'm wondering if that's how they intend to offer usb connection through an adapter card?

From the manual...
"Glove box
Depending on the vehicle equipment, there is an AUX-IN connection or a Media Interface installed in theglove box. Media Interface is a universal interface for mobile audio equipment,e.g. for an iPod®or USB...
The key word above is OR ... It may be possible that you do NOT have the media interface and instead, have the AUX-IN connection.

Appears so. I didn't understand that it was one or the other. I'll try the PCMCIA adapter if i can get a 16 bit card Thanks.

In the picture on left is the cable that came with the car. It has iPod connector and a female 3.5 mm.

The one on right is an USB cable that I bought from the dealer.

These cables connect to the left wall inside the glove box just above the shelf.

I had this same in my previous 2011 E350 like I now have in my 2010 E550.

That's the cable the dealer first brought out for me.

Only the 3.5mm port in my car to connect. Do you have the PCMCIA slot below your volume knob?

Yes,

I also have that slot below volume control. Also had it in the 2011 E350.

Tried PCMCIA to USB card but it wasn't recognized (32 bit but I believe they're backward compatible). Came with driver which I' sure is needed....is there a way to load it on my own (it's a mini CD)?
