2012 E550 - Warped rotars for the SECOND TIME
#226
i HAVE A 2010 E550 that I bought new from Park Place Mercedes in Fort worth that has 27000 miles on it. I reported problems with the breaks when I had 10000 miles on car. The service department said there was no problems. When I took the car in for the annual service they could not duplicate the electronic problems or the rear air pump staying on for hours but they did inform me that I needed new rotors and pads on the front of the car.I read some of the earlier responses about bedding the brakes. If the car cost $70,000 and the brakes are that screwed up it is a worthless POS. I solved my problems and will not be needing this forum anymore.I sold the POS mercedes and bought a BMW 750 li

Interesting....this is for the E350 but relevant to this thread... Service Bulletin
"LI42.10-P-054524 SEPT12 – 212.072/090/272 front brake vibration. Thickness fault on brake disk replace pads and disks." Since it doesn't assign a fault to me that means it accepts all faults.

The Drivers Front rotor measured 35.90 and the Passenger measured 36.05.
Both are OEM rotors “same part numbers” and both have no wear “lip or dish” on the rotor.
My service advisor replied to my email today... he is looking if my VIN would apply.. but hightly doubts it.

I took my car to my mechanic.. we measured the front rotors and there is discrepancy on the width.

The dealer replaced the front rotors and brake pads under warranty.
I'm now on my 4th set of front rotors if you can believe it!
Any recommendations for non-OEM brake pads? I saw references to Porterfield R4S racing pads on the AMG fourm. I think it'd be a waste on my all-season tires though.

On my 2nd set, all I changed was the rotors (Napa brand), not the pads. The rotors warped out within about 10k. Now with my 3rd set, I changed everything, both the rotors/pads. (Wearever brand) $227 @ Advance Auto Parts for the pads/rotor set. Looks nice and bites pretty good. I'm not sure what to think or suspect this time anymore. Me the driver, the rotors, the pads, the components, or the whole car...I just gave up. I still love driving it. I look at is as yearly maintenance or something. But don't get me wrong, I do fully still understand the frustrations that those are going thru.
The rotors has tons of crosses on it. Makes it looks pretty cool in person.

TSB is LI42.10-P-054524
Dealer replaced the front rotors and pads. Part numbers as follows:
Rotors: 000-421-15-12-07
Pads: 004-420-80-20
Not sure why the rotor P/N has two extra digits - must be something specific to the TSB because the dealer did not have the parts in stock.

My SM replaced with the same defective parts at ~10k and now having same issues at 27k...says if I can show him the shimmy at high speed braking he will replace with the part #'s listed above. I figure a quick trip to triple digits and heavy braking to scrub off 20mph will prove my point. Calling MBUSA tomorrow to give them an earful and get some support for my SM to change out to the correct parts. Hope this helps others experiencing the same problem.

2011 E550 4matic
sorry, been away from the forum for a while, but id like to contribute if anyone still cares.
-2011 E550 4matic
-bought CPO late 2012 with 10,900 miles
-it had a shudder/pulse in steering wheel and brake peddle from day one
-took it in and dealer replaced pads and rotors, no questions asked
-been smooth ever since, however, I do not put a lot of miles on her. I think i'm only at 14K now. About 2K miles since replacement.

The thickness for both NEW OEM rotors was 35.90mm.. our rotor should be 360x36mm .. so i'm not sure if that's just a rounded up number or 35.90mm is the correct number.
if these don't work.. C63 AMG front rotors (non PP) will fit in our cars, I will try those next.

I'm new to this forum and joined because I wanted to find out if anyone else experienced vibration or shimmy when braking their 2011 E550. It certainly was an eye opener. I noticed the problem at about 8,000 miles and just now brought it to the dealer at 15K. They replaced the front rotors and pads and were charging $824, stating its a wear problem and not covered. I complained using my new found knowledge and they are now looking into it.
Thanks for all your help.

Rotor do wrap and the roundout can be measures and sometimes visible upon rotation or on a flat surface. The thinner the rotor is the more prone to wrapper. One car's rotor wrapping started after a hard brake and getting splashed with water. It would re-warp quickly after resurfacing on a lathe.
Warping has never happened on 300TD and 300D. The heavier and thicker the rotor the better. IMHO: The larger the outer diameter, the easier for warping.

Have you tried solid rotor? Cross drilled look cool, but were made for outgassing from organic pads, what are obsolete. The more metal the better. The ones with large center vent slots are said to brake slower and wrap easier that more heavier rotors.

2012 E550 sedan owner here and I have the same problem with the brakes causing a vibration in the steering wheel, once the pads and rotors heat up. I also noticed a grunting noise from the front end while braking, but thought it was normal until I saw the Service Bulletin for it. I bought the car used with around 7,000 miles on it and now have close to 20,000 miles on it. Started noticing the problem about a month ago.
I came to this forum to see if anyone else had this problem and was shocked to find this 10-page thread. My car is at dealer and was told that the tech inspected the brakes, but could not find anything wrong with them.
Thanks to this forum I found a couple of Service Bulletins (listed below) that I think apply to my E550. Hopefully, this will fix the issue by having the rotors and pads replaced. I'm going to contact my dealer with the info and let you guys know what happens.
LI42.10-P-0555595 FEB13 – 212.091 E550 4matic, grunting noise from front axle area during medium / hard braking (similar to allowing vehicle to creep slowly from a stationary position with brakes partially applied), replace front brake pads.
LI42.10-P-054524 SEPT12 – 212.072/090/272 front brake vibration. Thickness fault on brake disk replace pads and disks.

Update to my previous post:
The dealer says the tech knew about the service bulletins, but refuses to replace the pads or rotors under warranty because my car is 19,000 miles (warranty for pads & rotors is 12,000 miles) and doesn't feel the vibration is bad enough. They said if I want to replace the front pads and rotors it's close to $1,000. Very disappointed.

Complain to MBUSA. Make them know what you feel and also that you know and your dealer knew about the bulletins before your problem got bad enough you had to go complain. Your problem probably started way before you actually complained about it. It just slowly crept in without you knowing before your first hard braking.
If complaining does not help get 3rd party parts and have them replaced by any other shop or do it yourself. And then tell your dealer and MBUSA you did it and how sad you feel you cannot trust your car's manufacturer for the brakes.
Brake wear is normal and depending of the driving habits can mean the pads go in very short time but the pulsation that is cause either by uneven rotor wear or warped rotors should not happen no matter how worn the rotor is. MB is treating us like **** with this.
These cars are supposed to be some of the best money can buy...yeah right.
Get aftermarket rotors and ceramic pads and be at ease and enjoy otherwise so well built car.

Another update.
Good news. Voiced my displeasure to my service advisor. He spoke to the service manager who spoke to MBUSA and they approved a one time "good will" repair, meaning they will cover the cost for replacing the front brakes.
I should be getting the car back today. Hopefully the problem is solved.

I have a 2011 E550 bought new. When I brought it in for the 20K serivce, the dealer said that they noticed a 'shimmy' during the test drive when braking and would replace my front rotors and pads as good will when I had the time. I had noticed a little vibration after applying the brakes a couple of times - nothing too bad, especially compared to my 05 Lexus GS430. I never mentioned it to the dealer - they noticed the problem.
It has been about 4,000 miles and the shimmey has not gotten any worse, but I am getting the work done tomorrow.
By the way - the Lexus had to have it's front pads replaced every 15,000 to 20,000 miles and both of the rear calipers froze up and had to be replaced at 63,000. The service manager told me the braking issues were 'known' problems but that I would have to pay for new calipers and pads as the brakes were out of warranty at 63,000 miles.

2013 e550 couple rotor issue
At the end of 2012 I purchased a E550 Couple. At around 4,000 miles I noticed when I was pressing on the brake pedal as pulsating feeling as well as vibration in the steering wheel. I immediately went to my local Mercedes Dealer and had the front rotors and pads replaced because they said those parts were defective.
Now at 17,000 I had the same problem again and I really had to fight with Mercedes Benz of North America to finally have them replaced again at no charge with special rotors and pads that they claim were the European style parts.
Mercedes claims that they have not seen this as a common occurance, I feel that if it happend to me it must be happening to other drivers as well. So if you experienced a similar problem with your E550 please let us know so we can address this design problem or parts problem with Mercedes so that we will not be facing future unnecessary expense do to Mercedes design flaw.
Thank you for your time and hope to hear from other soon,
Sol Dunst

Funny, my dealer once told me it was because i was getting my car washed after driving for a long time. They said that the hot rotors got warped by the cold water... BS !!! Id go every Friday after a 45 minute free way commute... They don't want to fix it. bottom line.
I wish you luck. I had the same deal on my E500 back a while ago. New pads and rotors at 8K miles for 1200.00 insanity... Seems like when I moved from the V8's to the less expensive V6's my problems suddenly stopped. Had 2 V8's and 2 6's never a single problem with the 6 - ON the V8- New top half of motor at 3K miles then my next one, brakes rotors and squeaks galore..
Go figure.

Yeah, I had all four rotors (and pads) replaced at 9,000 miles on a 2011 E550. Wildly out of runout specs. On warranty.
Lasted to 43,000 miles --- brakes pulsing horribly, surely a safety issue. I paid $1.200 for a front brake job. Not much complaint, 33,000 miles ain't too bad, but ROTORS HORRIBLY OUT OF RUNOUT???
Oh, well, that's E550 brakes for you. Dealer ALMOST says, "happens all the time."
This brake job was the third part number for the rotors. Seems like they are working the problem --- only hopefully success now.
Pulsing is ALWAYS a safety issue --- really screws up the brake computer's "thinking" in an emergency.

gave up on merc brakes
I gave up on oem brakes for the w212 e-class. Went through 4 rotors replacments over 95,000 miles. The dealer replaced only one set off warranty.
Swaped them out for NAPA rotors and pads.

2012 E550 with RENNtech ECU
I have a 2012 E550 coupe. I bought the car brand new in May 2012. The rotars warped at 8,000 miles. The car would shake and shudder every time I braked. They replaced the pads and rotars telling me that they had warped (although they had the nerve to mark down that I had been driving the car aggressively - if by aggressive they mean sitting in bumper to bumper traffic every day then yes.) Although they did keep the car for 2 weeks for good measure.
Anyway, the car now has 12,100 miles, and the problem has returned. Every time I brake the car shudders. I called my dealer and they told me they would be scrutinizing very closely as they have already done this once, and they're not going to want to replace them again. I almost lost my **** at this, I spend $70,000 on a car and these clowns are now threatening to not replace them. I also love how on the website they tout the brakes as being "high performance" and can "with stand repeated hard braking" LOL. right. My bicycle has better brakes than this piece of crap.
Anyway, what's my best course of action here? I absolutely REFUSE to pay $700 for another set of worthless brakes. I have the car booked in at another dealer, but the brakes are 100 miles out of warranty. I think it's ridiculous that a $70,000 car has brakes that are apparently only good for a few thousand miles. I will never buy another Mercedes again.

I have the same issue with my 2012 E550, have 45k and am on my 5th set of pads and rotors and I do drive a lot and sometimes spirited. Dealers have been great and replacing them at their cost. Has to do with the friction layer being warn off by our driving and MB has been trying different pads.
Most people have trouble getting warranty replacement after the first set
In my case it took a call to MBUSA Customer relations to get warranty replacement..... For the third set of brakes paid out of pocket.
