K & N air filter- 2012 W212
If you have installed K&N what are your results?

On the serious side, I don't want to be Donnie Downer, but if I were you I'd check to see of our cars use heated element type MAFs. Oiled K&N's have been known to kill these types of MAFs and I can't imagine they are cheap to replace.
You say you are familiar with them from prior use, but not all cars use heated element MAFs.

Judging from the layout and routing of the engine air intake I'm thinking the 2012 V6 DI engine only has one air filter, but I don't know for sure ... I have not changed mine yet.

I'm sure if it came down to it and there were some major problems with the car that had anything to do with anything that dealt with the air filters, they will attribute it to the K&Ns and void the warranty.
M-B and BMW balance their motors out to a point where things like K&N Air Filters aren't the commodities they were in the old Mustang days (when I was all about K&N's). I'd avoid it and save some $$$$.
