Brake replacement question
Hey all. So my 11 E550 is in at the dealer having some damage to the bumper fixed (idiot backed right into me in the parking lot), as well as a fault in the dynamic driver seat fixed. Got a call from them to let me know that the brakes were getting low, 500-1k miles left they said. They said its $771 to do. I mentioned this to a few of my friends who insist this is an insane dealer markup and that i should either try to do it myself or find a local shop to do it. Was curious what everyone pays for the brakes normally? what should i aim for? and how hard are they to do yourself if you have 0 experience with brakes.....

I did it myself, it's pretty easy. I have a bunch of friends in MN that can do it for you in the St.Paul/Minneapolis area for a lot cheaper.. Btw, the $771 is two fronts or all four?

I got pics of my rotors from Advance Auto Parts.

Hey sorry for late reply was out all night. I have zero mechanical experience in doing repairs. Most ive done was change my light covers. the 771 was for the front alone. i contacted another shop here who does em and wants 550. Still seems high to me? How much do your friends do it for
Thanks!
Thanks!

my brake experience
Hi,
this was with my 2005 ML 500 but it had more brake dust than I liked.
I went with Zimmerman rotors and Akebono Euro Ultra Premium ceramic pads. Loved them.
No brake dust. No squeeling.
Much better than stock, IMO.
You may want to consider that combo, if available.

Are you talking about the rotors and pads or just the pads?
If you only need pads they are super easy to change in front:
Jack the wheel up and remove. Then punch out the two pins that hold the spring plate in place. After this just pull the pads out.
Then you need to push the pistons back in for the new pads to fit. I use a wood working grip but I guess you could also pry them in somehow.
Then some cleaning and apply some brake grease at surfaces where pads move inside caliper and install new pads. Then one pin and the other with the spring plate in place.
As you push the pistons in make sure your brake fluid reservoir doesn't overflow.
If your brake warning light is not ON yet you can take the sensor from the old pad and use it again with the new one. Only one sensor per axle.
DO NOT OPEN THE BIG STAR BOLTS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CALIPER. This would sepatrate the caliper halves and be a bit bigger job to fix.
For the front pads I bought ceramic pads from AutoZone. Same or better performance than original with no dust.
