Got a new Trek bike and wants to know if I should get roof mounted rack or trunk?

Anyone have the MB bike rack attachment? Does it only fit with the MB roof rack? Or will it fit on other cars factory roof rack?
Was thinking of getting a Saris Bones but I'm worried it might leave dents/marks.
Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I don't use a roof rack but if I did I would use the MB rack. Mount points are already there and easy to use, excellent materials, and engineered properly. I only chimed in because at one point I thought I would need a roof rack to haul extra luggage on a trip and researched but the trip was canceled.

E350 Coupe
I have a coupe with pano roof and I purchased the OEM roof rack to carry a 12' kayak. They are really well made and they bolt to the roof in the brackets under the small doors on the roof. They also have locking covers so they would be harder to steal I then have a Thule kayak rack that attaches to the bars. My kayak weights 41 lbs so a bike should be no problem. There is another thread that has photos (Hyperion has the bars). Supposedly they are made by Thule and are shaped like their areo bars. Good choice of bikes! I own a Trek aluminum mountain bike and a Trek carbon fiber road bike. Search for the other thread it provides a lot of info.

I just order the Yakima MegaJoe3 bike rack. I'll post it up in a week or so.
I will probably wrap the foam pads with fresh terry cloth and clean & wax the surface before each use to avoid scratches.

Will The oem MB bike attachment fit/attach to other cars cross rails also or only with the oem MB roof rack?
I want the bike attachment to be able to fit both the E and mdx.
Will the thule fit the oem MB rack?

Instantfob,
That's a great deal for the Yakima!
NorCal. I believe the MB oem rack and bike attachment are made by thule.

VINBENZO - I'm not sure what kind of bike you have but I ride mostly road and tri bikes about 5 times a week. I use the MB basic carrier and MB bike rack on a E350 wagon. My bikes weigh less than 15lbs but I hate trying to put them on the roof alone. I only do it if I absolutely have to! It's so easy with two people. If you are going to load your bike on the roof alone often, I would highly recommend a rear mounted rack. I find myself taking out our MLs with a hitch mounted Thule T2 when I know there is any chance that I will be alone.

I have a trek DS 8.5. It's a hybrid bike. I think I'll go with a trunk mounted rack for now. Thanks for the advice guys

if you go trunk-mounted, look at models that cradle the wheels. The ones that hang bikes on their top tubes tend to scratch them.

Considering buying one of these.

Amazon.com: Stoneman Sports QSP-610 Sparehand Adjustable Bike Bar Adapter, Black Finish: Sports & Outdoors Amazon.com: Stoneman Sports QSP-610 Sparehand Adjustable Bike Bar Adapter, Black Finish: Sports & Outdoors

Now you can carry the bike with one of these adapters so your mtb or any bike with funky top tube will be level on your rack.

Talking bikes

I thought of a roof rack and then just knew there WOULD be a time when I would drive into the garage and forgot about it.

I thought of a rear rack but the bike sure gets dirty/wet in the elements.

Then I though of an E wagon--bingo--where you can lay the bike inside without removing a wheel. Safe from the elements and bike thieves.

FYI---even with a sedan, you can fit the bike in the rear seat area. Remove front wheel and place in trunk. Flip bike upside down and rotate bars sideways. Place on floor behind front seat.

Anyone with these roof mounts have any or much wind noise? Or how about any problem with scratches over time with the trunk mounted ones (not sure about this one be cause I don't know about lifting a bunch of bikes on top of my car multiple times. Seems like your asking for trouble)?

roof mounts do cause some wind noise, but it wasn't too bad......just need the music a little louder to help drown it out.......guess it depends on one's tolerance as well as the distance being traveled
