fan noise after car is off? 2k14 E550

Hey guys,

Just took delivery of a 2k14 E550 4matic, nearly full loaded --

just got back from a 40 minute drive back from work -- the car is off and I can hear a fan noise from the engine bay, fairly audible from about 15 feet away -- almost sounds like those tornado sirens from gradeschool but softer -- is this the turbo's cooling down?

I've heard this once or twice before, but lasted only a few minutes.

Thanks in advance,

Evaporator Fan. It usually runs quietly for a few minutes when you park the car after driving around with the AC on.
But it should not be very audible. If it is loud then there might something wrong with the fan.

The 2014s are louder than the previous generation. Mine is audible as well at times when I turn it off. Turns off after about 15 seconds. Car is already at 3.8k after a month of ownership. Zero issues aside from passenger window rolling down slower due to the bottom cover getting rolled down as well. It's normal.

I don't know, mine is loud as hell. I have a 2011 and when I start the car with the AC on the noise literally fills my garage. I always just assumed it was normal.

No, problem there. It is working like the way it was designed.

So I've been reading more about the general loudness of the motor in a few different models. Seems to be an issue with the C, CLK, and the E models. You mentioned that it is working as designed, and is generally accepted as normal (even by the dealership techs). This is where my issues comes into play. I'm not sure how someone (specially car guys, as I'm assuming we all are), can pay $50k plus for a lux/performance vehicle and generally be OK with this ridicules loud engine notice.

I currently own a 2012 C300, and it's so loud that when I pull into a restaurant (where people are waiting outside), those people literally stop their conversations with each other and turn and look (as if they are about to dodge a 747 landing in the parking lot). It's borderline embarrassing. The dealership explained (after further diagnostic) that it's a know 'issue' with the C and CLK's. I've been reading into the new E, as my lease is up soon on the C, and I'm considering an upgrade. This of course comes after I have decided that no way I was going to buy my C outright at the end of my lease because of this noise. Now I'm reading that the same issues exists on the E!

Unreal...... How do these cars even leave the factory like that? I've know several owners of all BMW models (which I have sworn against buying for many years) who have no such noise. I hate to say it but I'm considering jumping ship from the Benz world. Very disappointing.

the noise is barely noticeable on my 2012, it sounds about as loud as one of those mini hand fans people use at sports games.

My 2012 C definitely screams - only with the A/C on and when it is hot out though. It's not really audible inside the car.

If you pop the hood and feel the amount of air it is pulling through it is impressive - so I'll chalk it up to the pitch of fan blade they have used. It never bothers me much - I'd rather have it be noisy and effective than quiet and ineffective.

By the way....if you have LED headlights on your 2014 e, each headlight has three thermostatically controlled fans....so even after the main radiator fan goes off, you may still hear a fan noise around the headlights.

You should probably take the car back and demand a new one

E250 fan noise when the car has been off for awhile...

Anyone experience a subtle fan noise when the car has been parked for awhile and a door opens and closes? I understand that there is a cooling fan or evaporator fan that turns on once the car is parked after a trip.

When my car is in the garage overnight and I open a door and close it I hear a subtle fan noise for seconds to minutes. Throughout the day it doesn't happen only when it has been sitting for several hours (i.e. in the garage overnight).

Thoughts?

I have the same fan noise on my 'E, cbadmbz, I'm pretty sure it's normal.... 2014 E550

This is a noisy car ... even moreso when it's off!

it sounds more like a little motor, to me, winding up when i get in the car before ignition. i hadn't thought anything of it, really - just one of those things that happens for some reason, presumably by design.

the fan noise back by the exhaust is prominent after longer trips, when parked.

Reviving this thread a little. I notice sounds from my car sometimes hours after it's been off, or at least has been sitting in the garage a while and maybe I opened the door to get something. Seems like it would drain the battery pretty quickly if it's on as much as it is.

Have had this issue too. My wife's E350 wagon. In fact she got a auxiliary battery malfunction warning because I think the battery was being drained. I put it on a trickle charger, and now we lock the doors when the car is garaged. the noise has stopped and the aux battery message has gone away. I think these cars do not go fully to sleep when you just shut them off. Try locking the doors. Then listen for the noise. I think you will find it goes off very quickly after the car is locked.

Same here-- '14 E250. Locking the car shuts it down.

Me too with the noise on my 1-day old '14 E350. I'm not sure if the noise kicked-in after I opened the car doors after it was sitting in the garage for about 2 hours or if the AC evaporator was running the entire time. So, I next locked the doors, then returned about 20 minutes later and all was quiet. Strange.

Amazing. I've had the same noises from the evaporator fan. I'll have to try this.

Funny thing is my two 550s did this but the 63 locked or unlocked does not make the fan noises and it's got the same active full led lighting system ... I wonder what's different

I have the LED adaptive headlights on my 2015 E350 with the annoying fan noise. I've talked the dealership service rep and he said it was normal, pressing further he took my concern to the regional service rep (who just happened to on site), he told me that a new service bulletin has been issued with a software update that shortens the fan run time (my E350 sometimes runs for over 2 hours). They'll do the update tomorrow morning, i'm hopeful it solves the problem!

Note my 2014 CLS550 also has the adaptive LED headlamps and it does not ave the annoying LED fan problem ....
