This post I will have to disagree with. There is no way that the MB factory would send a car that does not have the AMG engine on it out the factory with the AMG badge on the trunk lid, no way.

So far the only AMG designation on non-AMG cars that I know of is the print on the AMG rims that some cars come with.

If your dealer sells them with the AMG badge they must be adding them at the dealer.

Agree with Arrie, the factory would never put an AMG badge on a car without the AMG engine. It would cheapen the "brand". The sport package does not an AMG make.

At times I have pulled up behind a SL600 and on the rear trunk lid is a big chrome V12 or BITURBO. These driver applied additions are true, but what's the point? It is worse with the AMG badge on a non AMG car. You can do what you want with these extra badges, it is your prerogative, but why are you doing it?

He's going to have to post pics of these non amg vehicles with badges from factory. Audi has an s-line badge not a s-badge. Bmw doesn't even have a separate badge for m-line. My sport model e350 didn't come with such emblems either. That would be shameful.

If there is any question about the factory putting AMG badges on non AMG cars, go to mercedes-AMG.com and read the sections on "What Makes An AMG" and "How To Spot An AMG". End of discussion!

Don't quite understand the fetish of putting an AMG badge on a non-AMG vehicle. Most non-car people have no clue what the AMG badge means, and they're clearly not fooling those who do - so what's the use? I went so far as to de-badge my CLK55 - why? Because I think the car looks cleaner without all the bling on the trunk deck. Plenty of AMG imposters here in Northern Virginia. All I do is laugh - and then blow their doors off!

Wow, some of you guys are pretty mean (and funny).

But in Asia, it is true that some of the car maker/authorized distributors will put a M or AMG badge (like AMG on one side and E350 on the other) on the vehicles with an optional M or AMG appearance package.

Leapingpoint's mods look very nice and I don't mean to rain on his parade. However, the AMG badging is controversial and he needs to know that many MB fanatics will react negatively to it. This way he can reconsider placing it on his car, or if he leaves it on, know some people will not be impressed.

There is no need for me to post photos of factory non-AMg models that come with AMG badges, because a few people upstairs already proved what I said is true. All I can say is, I encourage those who think USA="the entire world" to actually go out some time and see the world.

Hyperion, you would have a point if I had E63 badge on my car but I don't. So you can shove it.

Perhaps you should go through the forum and find all those who use replica AMG rims first. While you're a it, you can also tell all those who have carbon fiber tape thingy on their cars that its not real carbon fiber!

To each his own! Who cares what someone else does to their ride?

And in 2008 a family member bought a brand new 2009 CLS550 sport that came from the factory with the AMG badge! He bought the car locally here in Northern Virginia from ASC (Authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership).

Well, it would make sense to me if the people who reacted negatively on my AMG badge to have the same negativity on those who purchase and use replica AMG rims. But I don't see people do that here in the forum. So clearly there's multiple standards here.

do people really think mercedes took over amg just so they could sell a couple of thousand more cars a year. They make alot more money selling c220 owners sets of wheels, bumpers and t shirts, its just a label. If people were putting c63 badges on c220 or whatever then i could understand all the fuss being made.
bmw have been doing it for years with the m badges and now merc wants a slice of the pie

you have really taken the low brow approach to this one leapinpoint

They basically say the same I did. Both indicate that the dealer is the one adding the AMG badge, not the MB factory.

It is a bit different thing to have AMG rims on the car compared to the AMG badge on the trunk lid. The badge on the trunk lid for most people mean the engine is AMG, on the rims it only means the rims.

Well, I seriously doubt that car came with the AMG badge from the factory. If it was a brand new car the badge was probably added by the dealer unless they had an option to order it with it in which case the factory would probably just send the badge with the car for the dealer to glue it on.

Also, do a google on the CLS550 AMG and you get two or three hits of cars that clearly are not AMG other than one showing a gorgeous black car without badges at all but comes up under CLS550 AMG. If the CLS with an AMG badge was really from MB factory there would be more than just one or two of them on the google search results, would you think?

I need to see a non-AMG engine equipped car come out of a Mercedes car factory with the AMG badge on it to believe it.

Ironically I would tend to go the other way and remove any AMG badges and maybe down-badge to an e350.
The folks who really know will recognize the other little details.
Otherwise I don't want to attract anymore attention than I already get.

Post #32 in this thread is mine. Not trying to be a hater on the boards, and seriously believe neither the factory, nor leapingpoint stuck the AMG badge on the car. Can also accept that in different parts of the world there are different conventions that bind dealers to certain ethics. Having spent many years overseas living on the economy I accept there are different cultural views on these matters. My post was in direct reference to those in my region who clearly put AMG badges on non-AMG vehicles. As stated, and I agree with boltonblue, my tendency would be to de-badge - or in his words - down-badge. Those that know will be able to pick up the subtle details that tell them it's a legit AMG. Those who don't probably won't notice anyway, and if they did they wouldn't know what they're looking at or what it meant!

wrong.

#33 says cars are like that at the dealer, but he didn't say it was like that from the factory or suggested that dealers glued them on.
#34 says "some of the car makers/distributors" so there was no indication that it was just the dealer.

you really need to read more carefully.

my experience is, some dealers do this (sometimes with, and also without the factory's consent).
here are some photos taken at an authorized dealer in Asia (taken from the internet). this would be an example of what you're talking about: AMG badge was taped on, probably by the dealer rather than the factory. it was taped on the wrong side. factory would replace the CGI lettering with AMG logo, as it's been done for years.

in these photos you can see the tail pipes are in oval shape rather than rectangular shape you normally see on US spec E-class with luxury package. so did the dealer replace the rectangular tail pipes with these oval shape ones? no, they're from the factory. just regional differences. no other particular reasons really.

US dealers normally don't do this, but in the rest of the world it's not uncommon. BUT, Mercedes subsidiaries in certain countries actually run promotional programs and request Mercedes factory to make limited edition, special lines, often times with packages and design no other countries have ever seen. these models are also badged differently, from the factory, not the dealer. it's been done for years, nothing new.

here is the latest facelifted W212 E200 sold with AMG package in Taiwan:
photos and article published in a reputable review site.

but you're probably gonna say that i can't prove the AMG badge was taped on from the factory...
okay.
