Quote: Just got all my cash, in full -- thanks again to all of you for your support, I'll definitely be back in 2015 for the CLS550, will miss my E.

Thanks also to SolidGranite -- my brother in arms, thanks for all your wisdom and advice.
Peter,

I have followed your saga with great interest, and am glad MB made you whole. You would think MB would have somehow made 100% sure you were getting a flawless car with the replacement. Sorry you or anyone else would have to go thru this. Hang in there..

Thank u to all for your kind feedback

These are first world problems for sure, but Benz has really impressed me with their reimbursement

I don't think I'm any smarter than anyone, but the wisest advice
(this forum) was be patient and be kind yet be persistent with Mbusa and the dealership.

Other than the trans, these Benz vehicles are amazing machines and I look forward to owning one again and being part of this circle of owners. Though this may sound contradictory, I miss my e550 though I don't regret my recent decisions.

You would think, as you said, Benz would have test driven the replacement prior to delivery... Oh well, I know now it doesn't work that way!

Btw the service advisor let me drive my former black e550 home so he could help me get out the car seats and then take the e550 back to the dealership. The transmission was smooooth. It is possible! Only time would tell if it would come back. Also he said that rebuilding didn't work, they had to replace the entire transmission .

He ended on top of the MB E-class hierarchy - he got a sweet E63S (well deserved after all of that trouble).

You must really like Mercedes to stick with it after all the trouble. Anyway congratulations. Does this car use the same transmission as other E classes? Hope you don't have any more rough downshifts. Cheers.

The E63 gets the MCT version of the 7G-Tronic that replaces the torque converter with a wet clutch.

Thanks Munich for all your support -- couldn't have done it without you and the great support on this forum. MBUSA kicked me $2k additionally towards service plans, warranty, and tire wheel.... really enjoying this car

When I was dropped off at my house the last time in my black E550, i truly was sad to see it go -- despite our tumultuous love hate relationship... had to get back in a Benz, but just couldn't trust the E550 transmission anymore... hence... a different variety of the E-class....

It ironically had an eco issue that it is being fixed as we speak (do I have terrible benz mojo or what??) but it was just a bad sensor and the car is otherwise working and driving well...

almost .... too well.

Thank you ... no rough downshifts now, and the shifts are wicked fast -- at WOT I love the sound of the car shifting and the exhaust making that loud burp... a head turner for sure.

MBUSA CAC is giving me the silent treatment on my seatbeat b-pillar ring/rattle/buzz issue. It sounds like someone shaking a loose Rolex next to your left ear as you drive. Car has been in and out of dealer more than 37 days. (Replaced two sets of seat belts, seat belt height adjuster, driver seat rail, and random trim panels)

Started a case with them since 3/28 and still under review process as of today.

Unless the car is not running and sits in the dealership, MBUSA will drag it out.

On the bright side, I get to test drive many loaner cars.

Crap...just came across this post. My 2014 E550 Coupe that i picked up via Euro Delivery March of last year, developed this hard downshift issue several weeks aog. I have around 9K miles on the car. At first i thought the car needed to warm up first, but now i've noticed hard downshifts about 70 to 80% of the time. I mean when it does it it's like WTF?...what was that all about.? I have to bring the car in for its first service tomorrow, so i'll see if they can get this tranny thing looked at while it's there. Stay tuned...

Hey Kirkster,

I had it for a while as posted previously on this thread (I think). I have since not experienced it at all. It just went away.

Well...thanks good to hear I think? i'll let you know what they say once i have it in for service tomorrow. I started noticing that the downshifts on mine were very abrupt. normally smooth as silk. 5/4 4/3...they jerk the whole car. If I slow the car gradually it seems ok, if i decelerate more quickly, they seem to be more pronouncied if that makes sense.

Now, can you appreciate why I had Benz buy back TWO of these defective cars?? It's just not normal. Some people knocked me for being soooo sensitive... It felt like I was getting rear ended!!! And I had mine 80% of the time!!

However in your case they'll reset adaptations and you'll be smooth again for 10k miles

Peter, was there any change, that you are aware of, between the 2012 and the 2014 E550 tranny or are they identical?

As far as my dealer told me the hardware changes annually... But dealers don't usually know much. It should be the same 7g tronic+ trans. The software may have changed to make it more fuel efficient.

Have they given you any feedback?

They are saying it's the same. However, there are very few posts re the clunky shifting on the 2012. I tend to agree with you that it's mostly software. Who knows though....

I think this whole problem is due to erroneous adaptations. That's why the problem is able to correct its self on its own in some cases. The 722.9 needs to be updated and shift adaptations re-learned, early on, before any hardware is damaged. Even then, the update may not be perfect, and another will follow. I dont know. What I do know is that this is the last thing MB or the franchisees want for their clients. This must be a priority for engineers.

Mine was in the shop today and they took the car our for a road test and confirmed the rough downshifts. They checked for software updates and error codes and found nothing, so they said there was no remedy for the issue and to bring the car back if it got worse.

Unreal. I feel it may be time for you to contact Mbusa but be prepared for a war of attrition
