Maybe a dumb question-- but would there be any best motoroil for the E250 Bluetec? Just regular fully-synthetic 15-50 or something else?I looked all through the damn manual and didn't see anything specific (unlikemy Jeep, where it plastered 5W20 on every possible sheet...). Thanks!

Do save your receipts to prove you have purchased and used MB approved oil for your car. (Just in case for warranty issues ... this is a new released engine afterall)

Thanks-- the service will be at an MB dealer here in Germany, but it's much cheaper to buy the oil and bring it with.

Interesting in Germany that you can bring the oil for the oil change rather than buying it from the MB dealer. I will say I have never asked but I have also never heard of that in the US.

Sort of like bring wine to a restaurant and paying a corking fee.

Here is the good ole USA they will probably tell you that the lawyers told them they can't use oil or any fluids or other parts they didn't procure.

As per updated info from MB, for Bluetec engines, the specification shoud be 229.52.

Per my owners manual, (2014 e250 Page 442) engine model 651 can use 228.51, 229.31 or 229.51 MB approved oil

In most shops, the labor pays the overhead and profit comes from the parts and fluids. Then their is the question of when a part that a customer brings fails prematurely.

Trying this approach right now for an "A service" I need . Per another post, I will bring the oil and buy the filter form the dealer. Will let you know what the dealer says.

BTW, I think the correct oil is more important for diesels as the low ash component has an effect on the emissions systems too. The 229.31 or 229.51 being specific to MB diesels. Be careful as there are MB-approved 229.3 and 229.5 oils sold too. But they don't appear to be diesel friendly as they don't have the last ".x1" digit. LiquiMolly and Pennzoil European being the easiest to find on the web that have this "almost but not quite" MB approval.

And this is the only oil I could find on Amazon claiming the 229.52 spec. But...it does not appear on the Bevo list.

Till last year the 229.51 was the choise for BlueTec engines. If you read WIS now you can see the only option is 229.52.

Can the WIS article be extracted and posted about how the 2014 W212 owners manual is incorrect or out of date for the oil specification on OM 651 motors?

Interesting I been told by my MB service department that on a 2014 E250BT, that 5W-40 should be used for most areas in the US/seasons and from what little I been able to located on 229.52 oil, that weight is not available yet.

Of course items like oil specification can change like the wind.

OM 642 is the only model engine which is restricted to spec 229.52 , but with an additional declaimer 229.51 MB BlueTec is also OK.

Our OM651 it is still OK to use spec 229.51 or 225.52, depending on the weight of oil required, 0w-30 or 5w-40.

0w-30 range is -4 to +86f
5w-40 range is -4 to above listed range of +86f

Note lower temps are listed for both oil weights.

For OM651 is it still OK to use the old 229.51...

Most German dealers frown upon that too but they usually make exceptions for servicemembers because they understand that we can get fluids for a fraction of the price they get them for. A liter od Castrol Edge professional goes for 17.49 Euros and no-name dino oil is about 7 euros.

Rovin - it is unlikely that Amazon will ship oil to an APO but the PX should be able to source a case of conforming oil for you.

That's exactly what I did yesterday-- interestingly, it ended up being the Aral, German version oil... but at nice American-style pricing.

Good. The 17.49 I quoted was wrong. The 229 Castrol is actually 19.50 Euros or $26.69 a liter. Tax in Europe on oils is pretty steep.

If the 229.52 is the ultimate creation of MB and is mandatory for higher prices engines, my advice, especialy for those who use to like 651 BT is to use the newest instead of cheepest.

In EU, especialy on Taxi vehicules, the 651 engines run more than 500K km within the specifications.
