Hood ornament question

I'll be picking up my 2014 E350 luxury soon. From the get-go I wasn't sure about the star on the hood. First concern, was how often it would be removed, or someone attempted to remove it. Second concern is car washes...will it survive?

The dealer said they could remove it and replace it with the MB emblem (similar to the one already on the grill). Not sure i'd like that.

Anyone have any issues with the ornament on their hood?

driven a mercedes for over a decade in socal, no problems whatsoever, i guess it depends on your area, but its also a cheap fix, 60-70 from an independant from what a friend told me. He lost his balance and put his hand right on the star, lol.

Have had 12 years of driving MB with no stars missing. I don't think they disappear like back in the 80s. LOL. plus it's easier to pry the big one off the trunk lid and you can't prevent that.

Sometimes the car wash will sort of twist it but I just straighten it right back out. I think it would take a lot to rip that thing off.

I lost a couple stars back in the 90s, I think it was more of a thing then (and I was in school and lived near campus, maybe that helped). In the past 15 years or so, no issues.

My parents have a 1999 e320 with the star and it looks as great as the day they bought it ... The star that is ... No car wash problems ... It's got a flex spring system to take some force

Only had 1 problem parked near a highschool in 1998 or so, they couldnt get the star off but the spring got bent so had to replace it, star was 11 years old so new one looked nicer anyway. May family has had sedans with the stars since the 70s, and that was the only problem I know of, knock on wood.

I think it was definitely a 80s/90s thing, but I guess it does make me a bit nervous now, but hardly ever think about it. I'd be more concerned with them damaging the paint trying to get it out than the star itself really.

Congratulations on buying a new car. Please post pictures of your car as soon as you have it.
And don't lose sleep over something that may (or may not) happen in future when some jerk happens to be near your car when he feels the urge to steal a shiny ring with three spokes and nobody's watching. I mean..I would worry more about someone driving distracted / drunk / texting and scraping the car than the likelihood of the hood ornament being stolen. Cheers.

Couldn't agree with you more. A texting 16 year old crashes into my e550 ... Everyone safe but it could have been bad

Don't use car washes that much, but never had a problem when I do.
I prefer the stand up Star on the hood. It's part of what makes it a Mercedes-Benz.

Thanks. Won't lose sleep over the ornament. A few days ago I spotted in my rear view a young lady in a GM SUV pull close to me, then back off. I noticed her eyes looking down as she texted. As I slowed down, she approached me and I held my breath waiting for impact. She backed off at the last moment, her eyes going back down to texting! This happened for a few blocks and I almost pulled over to let her pass. I'm hoping for better car/mobile systems that will prevent the need for texting and other distractions while driving.

Sadly, I think these days part if being a defensive driver is identifying texting drivers and doing everything I can to avoid them... I have definitely let these people pass in the past if I see them texting

Until that time we need immediate ENFORCED laws re: NO handheld communications devices. $500 fine for first offense; $1,000 second offense; confiscation of vehicle for 3rd offense.

It was the first thing I took off, replaced it with a flush AMG emblem.

I'd have no problem adding a zero to those fines, and not letting those with means buy their way out of responsibility.

And I too agree about the hood star being part of what makes a MB a MB. Guess it will be intensive hood/grille swap or lux model for me if I have a 2014+ non-S.

I knocked mine clean off with a snow brush by accident when I was in a rush. It cost somewhere around $50.00 at an indy shop to fix. I once had the rear trunk lid star managed some 10+ years ago but again it was a cheap fix. On occasion someone would move the hood ornament star and I would straighten it out but it has been many years since that last happened.

Frankly there are so many Benzes on the road these days that no one cares. The Spirit of Ecstasy on a Rolls Royce may still have some attraction but not the star IMO.

Heart sunk a bit....

parked my car 'in the back 40' at the mall where it would be safe from carts and door dings. Found this E350 in the same area. I looked at the hood and saw the 'fallen star'. I was hoping to meet the owner to find out what had happened, but that didn't happen.

I know I'm not a W212 driver but thought I'd chime in even having an older star that's been through more winters. No issues, even having had this car IN high school never had the ornament broken or ripped off. It will survive a car wash unless there is already something compromising it, but you should hand wash your car anyway or go touchless automatic. Anything else is terrible for your paint.
