Steering Wheel "Clunk"
2014, E350, 10,000 mi.. At times, when the steering wheel moves from its' retracted position (after car shut down) to its' memory position (when starting the car) there is a "clunk" sound emanating from the column base at the dash area. Happens about 50% of the time and only from a rested start.
Dealer has lubed, but sound continues.
Any thoughts on problem/solution would be appreciated.
thanks,

Old thread, but wondering if they resolved this. Have the same issue on our 14 E350. I can't find a consistent way to replicate the noise to show the dealer, very temperamental.

I have the same noise in a 2015 E400. I'm waiting for it to become constant, because the dealer is resisting any repair so far. Sooner or later I expect it to become constant, and then I will make some noise myself to get it addressed.

The only way I've been able to reproduce it is when I turned the car on while the drivers door is open. When I close the drivers door, the steering wheel clunks then starts to lower. I'm going to try to show the dealer this next time I'm in and see if they find anything.

I've spoken with my service advisor out here. He states that MBUSA is looking for a solution and that seems to be an occurring issue on some vehicles. They first tried a lubrication method of some sort, but that did not have any improvements so they are looking for another solution currently.

I am having this issue now. It started about a month ago and I dropped my car off Saturday. First they said it may have bene due to the cold weather but once it started it happened every time I got into the car and started it and steering wheel moved into position. Yesterday my SA aid they were still working on it. My car goes out of extended warranty in February due to years not mileage (only has about 35k) but I don't want to get stuck with a problem later. What was everyone's final resolutions oaths issue and any suggestions on what to tell the SA while they have my car and I have a loaner. Thanks.

Well - Last summer I changed my "preferred" dealer for service work. Had the new one look at the "clunk." They "re-indexed" the power steering column, and it was quiet. . . for about 6 months. Now noise is back.
I will re-address it with them as soon as it gets consistently cold enough to make my left front suspension "creak" happen all the time. That noise was why the car was in the shop for 5 weeks last spring. They heard the noise but couldn't isolate a cause. Then while they had it, the weather got warmer, and the noise stopped. Now that it is getting cold again, the noise is back. I'll take it to "dealer #2" later in the month.

Well they had the car since Saturday for this issue plus a rattling in the seat belt housing and I was told today both were fixed. Regarding the steering wheel clunk I was told the "steering wheel linkage was lubed and adjusted and that appeared tp have fixed it". Time will tell. Thanks.
