Wrong Oil Filter Used

I'm fearful independent mechanic used wrong oil filter [$2.90) for an in between oil change. Have been changing at 5K on E350.
Should I have the correct filter installed now or wait for next " B " at 20K.
The habit of changing oil more frequently has also thrown off the maintenance minder.

For your piece of mind, go out and purchase six oil filters. Changing it should only take approximately 15 minutes with no oil loss.

Definitely change now, oil filtration is critical. I have to ask - why change more often than required? With the normal MB approved maintenance schedule, the engine will significantly outlast the body, interior, electronics, etc.

Good question. 50 years ago we changed at 1000 then later at 3000. Old habits are hard to break and I was compromising at 5000.
I only drive 5000/yr and will review manual regarding mi and or time.
Thanks for both inputs.

Why bother changing the filter? You change oil in between so I assume you have MB service your car at every 10000 miles? If the MB filter can last 10000 miles without changing the oil between it certainly can last that same 10000 miles if you just change the oil in between and leave the filter to be changed at the next 10000 mile service. But, if they used a wrong filter then you should replace it ASAP, which is very easy to do as it is located at the top of the engine front meaning you do not need to drain the oil.

I change oil in between myself. Some folks think it is silly but I bought this car to drive until the wheels fall of. Oil change at every 5000 miles is a very low cost "warranty" to keep the engine humming until everything else in this car is gone.

The maintenance manual calls for service at 10,000 miles OR 12 months. If driving only 5,000 miles per year, you should still be getting an "A" or "B" service every 5,000 miles. The maintenance reminder is set to come on just before 10,000 miles or 12 months. I drive about 3-4,000 miles per year and my reminder comes on about 2-3 weeks before the 12 months since last service date.
BTW, this is another reason why I do not use independents and would never use one of the quicky oil change places.

I don't do anything to the service reminder. I let it run from the dealer service and it reminds me when my next 10000 mile service is due.

If you get service reminder and you only drove 5000 miles it could be coming because of the time limit.

Yes-that is exactly what happened and now the annoying reminder comes up at start. Tells me I need B service in 15 days. I'm at 15K.
Konigster's 2010 reset instructions are not working for me.

Since it is a 2012, perhaps you are due for your 24 month service, which would be the "B" service? Is the dealer doing the 12 month services?

I realize I goofed trying to save a few $$.
The 10K was done after year1 and since I only put 5K on in year 2, thought an oil/filter change would suffice till I got to 20K [ probably will take another year]

As my original post indicated, I suspect independent garage[not quick lube]
used the wrong filter. I now plan to purchase from dealer and have that garage replace.
Obviously, I will have the correct service done at 20K.
It's apparent that my service intervals interrupted the yearly reset. I was too focused on mileage.
Would like to get rid of reminders but I can't get Konigster's 2010 reset instructions to work.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated other than pointing out my stupidity.

Go to your MB service and have them reset it for you.
