OPINION: 2012 E63 AMG or 2014 E550 4-Matic?
Hey everyone,
So I've decided to keep my W211 for a little while longer, and I'm looking at getting either a 2014 E550 4-Matic or a 2012 E63 AMG when it comes time to upgrade... I'm really torn on this as the M278 with tune alone will put down 475awhp and I'm sure with catless downpipe would put down even more, but the M157 E63 is really hard to match, even while stock compared to things like the Audi S6. I live in Colorado but might keep the W211 as a daily driver for the snow, depending on how reliable it remains but as far as the comparison goes:
2014 E550 4-Matic
-Facelift body style
-All-Wheel-Drive (Faster around town?)
-Newer/better paint condition
-Lower maintenance cost on certain parts
2012 E63 AMG
-Faster out of the box
-More aftermarket available
-AMG nameplate
-Better seats/suspension tuning
-AMG MCT SpeedShift transmission
Anyone have any other points or opinions they would like to add on this? I don't plan to buy for possibly a year or two when the cars are more similarly priced for clean verisons of both, and I know only I can ultimately make this decision, but what would be your choice?
Thanks!
EDIT: Also considering a CLS in a 550 bi-turbo or 63 bi-turbo variety but will want to pay the same amount as the aforementioned cars... thoughts?

If you've got a winter / snow car covered, I vote go for the big dog.
If the 3rd car isn't convenient and rwd isn't in the cards, it's hard to turn down the E / CLS 550 4Matic with or without a tune.
If it were me, I'd rather not have two similar cars - in this case, you'd have the W211 and 212 or W211 and AMG. Consider a 550 4Matic and a sports car. Or, the E63 and a 4x4 / awd auto.
Either way, I'd turn your W211 into something else if I were in your shoes - a down payment and / or an entirely different car.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
(There's always the awd E63 S!)

I can't believe you are trying to talk yourself out of the AMG. You will be disappointed and second guess yourself every time you get into the 550. E63!!!

When i got my 2014 e550 all I could think about was the 2014 e63.... The rest, as they say.... Is history

Thanks for all of the responses. You've swayed me towards 2012 E63 especially looking at the Kleemann K1 numbers for it. However AWD would be the thing I'd really miss... Decisions decisions. Not sure if Id be disappointed with the E550 biturbo though, drove an S550 recently and it was so damn fast up here at elevation.

That facelift styling though... only thing that's preventing me. You guys are ultimately right though, then I won't have to worry about any friends' Audi S6s or 550is. 600rwhp/760wtq with a tune is nothing short of a supercar. I'd probably void any warranty I'd get with a 2014 anyway...

2014 CLS550 4Matic
Had several E-sedans including '14 refresh (not AMG) and now in CLS550 4Matic. REALLY liking the CLS over the E-sedan for styling and interior design. E still looks good to me but boring compared to CLS aggressive lines. So perhaps a CLS550 or CLS63 for you? Happy hunting and good luck.

AMG, I just made the same decision. After 8+ years I said goodbye to my 06 E320 CDI and purchased a loaded 2012 E550 4matic. I was cross-shopping the 2010 E63 with the 6.3L M156 vs the 2012+ E550 4M with the 4.6L twin-turbo M278. In the end the 4matic won over the raw power - too many rainy or snowy days where I live and I already have a beast.
I'd have liked a 2014 E63S wagon, but it was out of my budget.

Also considering a CLS AMG but I think my mind is made up that I want to go for the AMG variant, even if it isn't the facelift styling. As long as I can get something twin-turbo and do just a K1 tune from Kleemann, I think I will be happy. The W211 has quite a number of miles on it 137k, and at this point I'm done trying to recoup and money out of it. So I figure I will save up the cash for a 2012 E63 and in due time find a clean one, then possibly trade in the W211 for something as a cheap daily or keep the W211 as a cheap daily if maintenance is continues to be as low as it has within the past 6 months.

Everyone, I've decided to get a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, turns out if you do 5th gear pulls low in the RPM range the engine will overboost and generate a dangerous amount of torque that destroys the engine, forget the AMG!

I have the same dilema
2012/2013 E550: Around low 40's
2014 E550: Mid 50's
2012 E63, high 50's.
I want the updated styling of E550 since i have a 2012 E550 coupe. i don't need a fast car for my wife.
The 2014 E550 was about to win.. when C400 4M shows up.
I can ge one for about $6500+ off MRSP and lease it.
Better interior, better front end.. better side profile in my view.. the rear not so much.
I"m getting Airmatic, and 18" wheels. Better ride than steel springs. Trust me I have steel springs on my coupe. I miss my E55 airmatic.
Its for my wife and kids. Tuning will come later and it will be plenty for the family.
I will eventually get rid of my E550 once my ELW is done and I'll think about going back to AMG model.
If I was to merge C400 and my E550 coupe ..and choose 1 car. It would be a 2013 E63. But I don't have to chose and wife and i will be happy with our cars.
