2010 E550 questions

Thinking of moving from my E350 to a E550. Have this motor is my CLK550 in the summer and going back to the 350 in the winter was a bit of a let down. I've read about the front rotors, but am wondering how problematic the air matic suspensions are. I know the GL450/550's were a nightmare, but I believe these are different. Any input is appreciated. Thx

I had major issues with my Airmatic while the car was still under warranty. Right side of car was all the way up and left all the way down. Dealer replaced pretty much everything all covered. No issues anymore and I plan on keeping the car for another few years.

This suspension was one of my reasons for an extended warranty. However, it has been fine for the most part. It has only dropped twice in nine months and it was the rear end. First time was after leaving the car for 10 days. Second time was recently (months after first instance); it was dropped in the rear one cold morning after finishing a 4 hour drive the day before. Both times the car leveled out after starting (got vehicle rising message) and has been fine since. After the first incident I got in the habit of measuring the distance from the top of the wheel well to the garage floor from time to time. Normally it drops about a quarter inch overnight - maybe a half inch max. IIRC, there is a TSB in the sticky and mentions the car dropping by more than an inch.

I would get a 2012 if you can. TTV8 and no airmatic to fuss with.

Knock on wood but mine is fine. Also lowered with links. I am loving the airmatic thus far.

Still don't understand why people freak out over the Airmatic on the 550. Eventually, all cars need repair and work and someone has to pay for it. The Airmatic system isn't fool proof, but it is a great suspension and will need service at some point. Stick with the 350 and it's lower performance, but understand you are really missing out on a great car in the 550. This is my second 500 series E Class and I love the V8. I would not buy a 6 cylinder E Class ever.

I have a 2010 E550 with airmatic. No issues so far at 78000 miles. I have only seen issues with front rotors/brake pads, headlight switch died, and sun sensor went up in smoke. A great car which has been much more reliable than my 2002 E320. I would expect greater reliability from my NA V8 than the TT V8 in the long run.

Guys, really appreciate the input and yes Key08, after being in my CLK550 all summer and hopping back into the 350, is making me want to chase another 550!! I hear you there...one there are air matic issues is it expensive to repair...seems I could be prepared for a couple of grand to fix, so more than that would be concerning....

Is this what you ended up with?? Sounds like you got a great deal. The NA 5.5L is a great powerplant.

Thanks guys hopefully picking it up tomorrow. For the CPO they are replacing all 4 rotors and pads and one tire due to a bubble, other 3 tires are at 75%. Also center console cover had a small tear and they are replacing. Need to decide if I want to extend the CPO warr., no prices yet, but leaning toward picking up the max I can get.. Can not wait!!

great deal for under $30k. good for you. IIRC, extending the CPO is about $1,250 per year. You might be able to save by purchasing it through MB Santa Rosa or MB Austin. Didn't buy a CPO myself, but I think others have posted about saving $ on the extension.

Are they still running the promo with 2 months payments and some prepaid maintenance?

You DO WANT TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY to the max. You should be able to get it up to 7 years total and I understand it is with unlimited miles now. I have it up to 135000 miles but I will time out first.

And after your excellent dealer does all the items on the car for you buy the ELW from them. No need to go save pennies with others who did not do the job.

Congrats for a very nice purchase! After the E350 you will really enjoy driving this one.

Airmatic suspension isn't a big deal once it is fixed and taken care of, see it as a wear item just like regular struts. Go with Arnott aftermarket bags and parts if they do go out and you will be fine, they are lifetime warranty. Generally wouldn't start worrying about that until 100k.

deal with CPO this month is 1 year unlimited miles and 2 free service visits (A/B). I extended 2 addtl CPO years, but best I could do was 3k for those 2 addtl years. I worked him best I could, but only got $300 off of that. Net is with 33k total with 3 years worry free.....Got it yesterday....I'm thrilled....car is awesome, what a difference from my base 350

In addition to the CPO inspection doing the full brake job and tire, they also replaced a $485 seat control module, and gave me a new set of oem mats and 3 months Sat radio.....the HID lights are a huge improvement over the halogens....and I had the back massage on all evening......have not told my wife yet, of course she didn't not notice another black E in the garage, but thought she'd notice the 20day plate when she got back from the gym this Am and opened the garage, but nope ;-). I'll tell her today.....lol.....thx again for all the comments and feedback guys.....appreciate it!!!

I think you got a very good deal with all the work the dealer did for you. You will really like this one after the E350. It is an awesome car.

You got a really sweet deal fo sure. The cheapest CPO I can find here for an E550 is nothing less than $42,000.
