The average grade leather in my 100,000 mile E500 looked like new when I traded it in and the brown average grade leather in my 2010 E550 still looks like new at 55,000 miles. I will take average grade leather all day over a plastic seat. My experience with more exotic leathers in other cars and furniture is they do not wear as well. They may have a better comfort factor and that is it.

This is the W212 section of the forum. What E class are you driving that is pertinent to this discussion? Maybe you are in a new S? I realize the MBTex v Leather always gets people's blood boiling. I cannot find one thread on a tear in a leather seat surface here. Stitches in the leather material, no matter what the grade just don't appear to pull apart like in the MBTex material. Philosophical debate on wealth? huh?

Right, like I never see MBtex will crack or creases like leather does.
but that's none of my business.

This seems to be a PR nightmare. I'm surprised MB won't just take care of it or at least meet everyone half way. It's similar to the faded wood trim nonsense. I guess reputation doesn't mean what it use to.

between this and the faded wood, it seems like MB doesn't care how these cars look after some normal use. Can't wait for the headliner to start dropping...

There's nothing wrong with that girls seat, I sure don't see any cracks...I got good money she's also never conditioned it either...if you posted that to show how MB leather sucks, you failed

I would be driving an AMG if that were the case. I had Mb-Tex in my 2002 C32 and drove it for 4 years with no issue. I know that was 14 years ago, but I definitely think something is up with this latest MB-Tex material and MB should stand behind not only the product, but the installation or stitching. In the leather seats the material pattern runs front back. In the MB-Tex seat it runs side to side. It seems like there is more pressure on the seams that way and is causing them to fail. The leather seat material is stitched to a stretchy spandex like fabric at the front of the seat bottom. You can literally pull on it with your fingers and it expands. Can anyone verify if this is the same on the MB-Tex seat? That spandex-like fabric really allows the leather seat to compress without stressing the seams.

funny, after reading this post i went ahead and checked the drivers seat on my 2013 and i have the same exact tare in the seam portion.
brought the car into the dealer today and i was told it's a know issue and that there is a fix for this specific design flaw (seam is in the stitching which has less strength to it) and they'll be fixing it for me within a few days. i asked them to check all other seats/seams and they said they would but primarily that it happens in that exact spot on the driver's side.

considering my dealer said it was a well know issue and that they're simply not replacing it with apples to apples but with a 'fix' i'd think that this could be potential ammo for folk that are having a difficult time getting this fixed free of charge. if there's a "fix" it implies that there's a flaw and it should be addressed accordingly.

Front seat seam rip
I just bought a 2013 ML350BTK, Certified (what a mess) Brakes, rotors, windshield now i find the seat is ripped.
it took me 2 tries to get a decent detail i brought it back for a third try then i found the rip in the seat and crack in windshield
they replaced my rotors as i had never seen grooves that deep in a rotor, but i had to ask
not too sure what Certified means I just keep bringing it back I have 41,000 and i bought the Ext Warranty
thanks for the vent....

MBTex Issues
Hello,
There is a big misconception about leather and vinyl. Few decades ago MB had a very durable vinyl which lasted for many years, however now they are using so called MBTex which is not near the quality original material used to be.
I'm not going to have an argument with anyone, instead below I'm posting my personal experience;
Hello, a couple of years ago I did report having an issue with my 2012 E-350 MB-Tex driver seat seam cracking or separation - see the first couple of pictures. The MB dealer in Lafayette, Indiana replaced the lower cover under the manufacturing warranty. I did protect the lower, replaced cushion cover with a 1" thick foam sheet wrapped in a towel. Conversation with the MB-USA didn't bring any positive resolution in finding a permanent solution. My concern was that the seat will crack again in the same area.
Well, a couple of years later my wife's 2014 ML-350 driver seat MB-Tex cover cracked or seam started separating in the same area my 2012 E-350 did.
The vehicle has only 8000 miles and my wife (135 lb) is the only diver.
So, we are having over $120,000 invested in a couple of vehicle which are having an undeniable issue with a design and quality of the seating material. Over the period of several years we purchased eight MB vehicles from this dealership. Never had any issues with the leather seats with an exception of the last two which are vinyl covered. My dealer will replace the defective material under the warranty, however what will happen after a couple of years of normal use is very easy to predict. My wife can't fly in and out of the vehicle like a bird from a nest. Asking her to go through the same set up with the foam and towel, which has to be constantly rearranged is unfair and for a $65,000 vehicle unacceptable. MB did a harm to its reputation and exposed their loyal customers to a great deal of inconvenience and disappointment.

My wife started a new job and now we drive to work together. Which means the front passenger seat is now used regularly. My wife is ~130lbs and this week the passenger seat got the SAME RIP in the SAME PLACE.
I had the driver seat bottom replaced last year (MB covered the part, I covered the labor). Hopefully, I can have the passenger seat bottom replaced the same way. My appointment is next Wednesday, Aug 24th. We'll see what they say.
At 128,000km on the ODO, I am pretty happy with the car. Apart from the dreaded seat covers and the loud crackling pano roof.

The stitching in the middle of my drivers seat ripped. It's a 2014 e350 with mb tex, I thought MB tex are supposed to be durable. I took it to the dealership and they're telling me, it could be that I used cleaning chemical when cleaning the interior. I have never used any leather cleaning chemical before. Luckily, it's covered under warranty but I have to wait for it to be shipped from Germany. They're not sure when it will come in.
I was very surprised that the seat ripped!

you should frame that seat cover and hang it in a MB dealer managers office

An update...
Dropped off the car at the dealer this morning thinking the car is out of warranty so MB won't cover the defective part and I will be out ~$500.
Was I ever WRONG!!!
Now, MB stopped supplying just the bottom part of the seat cushion. Not you have to replace BOTH the bottom and the back.
At a very "reasonable" price of.............
..............WAIT FOR IT
..............WAIT FOR IT
..............WAIT FOR IT
CAD$2,700 + Tax + Labor.
WTF, MB????????

Jeez, it it too much to ask that mercedes makes a seat that lasts 5 years now? Your damned if you do, damned if you don't with German cars at this point. Buy a mercedes and deal with silly crap like the seats going to hell. If the infotainment electronics aren't a decade out of date, you can bet they'll need replacement early on too..
Buy a BMW and have the engine fall apart. Buy a VAG product and have everything fall apart.
I was hoping my 07 211 represented the low point of mercedes quality (the driver's side seat with mb-tex cracked as well). Contrast that with the 4 126s I've owned, and not a single one ended up with ripped seats (2 with mb-tex, 2 with leather).

So let me see, you bought a Mercedes Benz, payed big $$, then your seat cracked. MB installed a same GARBAGE in to you car that you payed for installation. Now your seat will crack as the old one, in about a year and you think you got a good deal out of them????!!!!
Dont get me wrong, i am in the same boat, got same car with the same crack but id never take it to the F+@#*g dealer and pay them to install the same junk in to my car.
What im gonna do is, do my custom leather 2 tone seats in mine and tell everyone i know how MB treats there customers and what junk we pay for.
MB needs to realize that they making a BIG mistake witch they will realize few years from now, that they will lose a lot of customers. Im sure they feeling it now. I hope
Wonder if any MB big shots reading these posts and what they got to say to this?! Assuming not , they have no time for this because most of there time insted seeing and hearing what there customers want, they spend on vacationing and spending $$$$$ on bunch of meaningless things.
My point is, do not pay for a tex or labor just tell them its my last MB and tell them to take a hike.

I'm very displeased with the Mb Tex in my 2012 E class. I have the same problem as the OP, and others in this thread and other threads. A nasty tear right along the seam in the seat middle.
I bought the car with a CPO Extended Warranty which was transfered to me. I took the car to my local dealer to look at it and the service guy me it definitely would NOT be covered under my warranty and quoted me several hundred dollars for the repair to which I declined. He told me the extended warranty only covers "major issues".
Seems like a load of s**t. I have read now at least 3 or 4 others that have had this replaced under the same warranty. What should I do here?
