Have had both leather and MBTex. MBTex is actually superior for durability and not showing cracks, lines and so forth or splitting. Everybody who has ever been in my car assumes it is leather.
BTW, many leather seats are actually covered in clear "vinyl" to prevent wear.

Aren't we all in the same general family? No reason for bashing. Whether mbtex or leather there's enough plastic inside and outside all our cars that it makes no real difference.

This MBtaxi and leather discussion has been going on here for years. Those who can't afford leather always make the same claims.Only leather for me. Even my daughter's new 2015 Honda Fit is leather.

Whether your seats are covered in cloth, vinyl, leather or some fancy named hybrid, new age covering, nothing replaces quality materials and good workmanship with how long things last. I doubt the OP is abusing the material so it must be defective and a bad example.
What I find comfortable, someone else won't - thank goodness we have choices.

AFAIK MB is the one who makes claims about MBTex. For those that have it and are happy, I am glad for you. If you upgraded to leather and feel it's worth the cost, then good for you too. I've tried MBTex in a loaner and it seemed fine but I missed my seat coolers (it's Florida after all). Personally I don't think the leather in my E550 is a big deal - it's not the nappa leather after all.
When I was shopping the sales guy kept insisting MBTex is better, more durable and many folks prefer it over leather. I found that hard to reconcile since leather was the upgrade, not the other way around. At any rate, I think MB is just rationalizing a cost saving measure because competitors to the E class come with standard leather. They've got to explain it someway when folks come in to test drive a $60k car.
There is no excuse for rips like this one regardless of the material in this car. If the OP's car had leather, there would be a bunch of told you so's from the MBTex fan boys.

Has nothing to do with what someone can afford or not, especially if getting an MB "E" Class. I ordered mine from Germany and specifically did NOT order leather-and had nothing to do with cost. I think it is great that MB offers a choice. As I said earlier, have had cars with leather and they did not wear as well as MBTex.

If I waited for a car with leather, I would have had a long wait since few dealers order E-class cars that way (except E550 or E63/S where it is standard). The only sure way would have been to order it and wait approximately 3+ months because when I went to order the car in Dec-2014, the surround view camera option was put on hold for an unknown amount of time. That option was more important to me than leather, which is the only option I might have gotten, if it was available. The car they found at another dealer had every other option I wanted, including my first color choice and I could have it in a week. So the choice was pretty clear to me. Not sure I understand your comment about S-class, but you can, of course, think whatever you like.

I was shocked to see all the MB-tex/Artico issues in the new W205 c-class.

^ and those photos are some of the better ones. Looks like someone threw up on the seats, it is that bad. Actually, worse than can be described. You need to see the pictures and ruined clothing as well.

Just got my car back on Saturday after they replaced the driver's seat bottom cushion ... similar problem as the OP. The dealership (Corporate Store) would only cover the part (extended warranty) and charged me 2.0 hours for labour. Based on the success of the posters, I'm going to write to head office about getting MB to cover the whole mess.
