The 3.5 litre engine, a known problem!
This morning when I started my W212 E350, 2010 the engine fan came on immediately, the outside air temp. was 15 degrees. After driving for about 1/2 hour the engine fan was still running, so when I got home I hooked up my OBD Scan tool which gave me an indication that my thermostat was broken and after consulting with a certified MB mechanic who informed me that the 272 engine series has a known problem with the thermostats that are used in this engine because they are turned on and off via an electric circuit rather than by engine coolant temperature like almost every other car. Mind you, this car has 24,000 miles on it and is 6 months out of warranty. I think MB should pay for the repair, I am curious to know what others think, your response is appreciated. Thanks.

Immediately i want to say, first off. well done. You take great care of that E class to only have 25,000 miles being a 2010. Cheers.
Second, please dont make the mistake of putting the response of individual dealers on this matter on MB. Mercedes is a peoples brand, but certain dealerships (which often have no personnel in direct contact with true MB reps) will sometimes give you bad service, or deny repairs. Call around, go to multiple dealers, and when you find a good one; stay. leave a yelp review as well. They work hard but you know how people can be in this world.. scamming, haggling, trying to skate by on small repairs for free for no reason.
Now third and finally, i 100% believe mercedes should 'goodwill' repair this for you. Your engine has half the normal miles given under the 4 yr/50 factory warranty and ALL cars after 2012 cpo have unlim mile warranties. So its way likely that the right dealer will do it for you. It is more than reasonable and it doesnt sound like a HUGE cost. Have them check other stuff when they go in there.
Treat them respectfully, before and after being given a bad response, and if so find another dealer. Its worth a longer drive for the right care of your baby; considering how slowly you have been putting miles on it.
Some parts break over wear, some parts brake over time naturally. Dont fault the cars low mileage for "CERTAIN" issues. Your lucky that puppy isnt direct injected. You have a very good 272 engine believe me. Solid. Whatever breaks on it, the repair cost will last as long as it did before it broke originally.. ( AT LEAST 4 more years out of this part. Given the same driving amount and condition )

My 2009 had the 272 engine as does my 2011 and I have never had an issue with thermostats or anything else with either car so I suspect it is just bad.
The comments re dealerships I find interesting as all of the dealers in Canada I have dealt with since my first car in 1987 have nothing but factory trained guys.
Only once did I run into a lazy guy and he got fired for his efforts of lack there of.

MBUSA "good willed" a $3500 repair on my 2008 E320 Bluetec that was out of warranty by 8,000 miles. If I wasn't a customer for life then, I am now.

I have learned never to say never but if MB is using some kind of computer operated valve to control flow through the rad that would be a surprise. An automotive thermostat is such a reliable passive device it defies logic that they would complicate it. Then again we are talking about MB!
