lane keeping assist inoperative
Hey Guys,
My wife just called me and said she's got a lane keeping assist inoperative message and so I have a couple of questions.
First is, is there an on off switch? Secondly, is this a trip to the dealer?
The car is clean, no fog or snow. No obvious obstructions to sensors.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Lane keeping assist inop message is not the same thing as turning the feature off. You shouldnt be getting that message when you turn it off. It is likely a trip to the dealer.

Understand that some of these sensor- and computer-driven features, like Distronic Plus, Blind Spot, etc., sometimes shut down unexpectedly, with no apparent cause, then start up again randomly or with the next restart of the vehicle.
Then you don't see the aberration again for 6 months.
I'd bet that most people with P2, etc., have had this experience. MB doesn't know what's going on --- some kind of interference or wild software problem.

I might add, be careful getting dependent on Blind Spot.
If it shuts down randomly, you might forget to watch your blind spots and get in trouble --- we learn to drive with habits and instinct when auto features have been "watching out for us." In spite of the warning message, it's easy to forget and drive with instinct. (Thus all the legal disclaimers in the Owner's Manual --- the MB lawyers have been very busy.)
HOWEVER, the features can be a God-send. The other day, at 75mph on I25, an idiot in a 1970's pickup, with his left hand busy with a cell phone at his ear, pulled in front of me from the right lane. He was even with my front bumper --- a collision was almost certain. Pre-Safe was on the brakes before I was --- a matter of milliseconds, but it very well could have made the difference. Missed him by inches. He drove on clueless --- the cell never left his ear.

Has the same msg with my blind spot sensor. When it says inoperative usually it means one of the sensors is gone and needs to be replaced. Before going to the dealer for this go into the setting and do a factory reset. In the past for other issues this has gotten everything back for me.

I just had the Blindspot Inoperative message the other day. I parked, turned off, and turned on again and it was back to active. If anyone here does go and get service, please let us know. I'd be interested in finding out the official diagnosis.

At 85,000 miles (137,000 KM) this warning popped up and I sent it in for service.
Turns out to be radar sensors malfunction. Both rear radar sensors were corroded and had to be replaced.
Luckily I have extended warranty or it would have cost me $1,500.00.

I am experiencing this with blind spot assist. Goes in Saturday, pending snow storm of course here in MA. I can post back but when I searched this forum for the problem they said it was corrosion or sensor related, more common in states where they sand/salt the roads in winter.

First, is the brake hold feature working? I once had my auxiliary battery freeze on me (-35c weather), but same idea. If the battery is malfunctioning, all or some of the features may become turned off or unusable. All I can remember was the brake hold, blind spot assist, not sure if park sensors or on or not. A simple check of the battery is usually free at any battery dealer.

for me, I din't rely on either feature. I just set the mirrors differently so that I don't have a blind spot. See this informative Car and Driver article on the subject. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...id-blind-spots
