Redline is bad for our cars?

Hey guys, so I was over at the c63 forum, just
snooping around and I found a thread about how
redlining a C63 is bad. I was thinking, those guys have a handbuilt 6.2 liter v8 and if they are saying that redlining their own engine is bad, what hope does my 5.5 liter non AMG engine have? I drive my E550 to redline like once a month, just to hear the big girl sing, but reading that thread has really made me think twice about redlining. What's your guys opinion on redlining our cars? Love to hear your input!

It doesn't hurt if you are having fun while doing it.

Seriously, the tranny shifts up to protect the engine. Just don't hold it in gear at high rpm for no reason. Did this other thread share any insight into why it was bad?

Ah! Just need to stretch those con rods, huh?

There is just so much quiet power in a 2011 E550, I can't think of a reason I would want to red-line it. You might pick up an extra 0.1 sec in a 0 to 60 --- for what purpose?

I just came back from 2 day Corvette performance racing school at Spring Mountain 3 wks ago. Instructors there stated that they push their 80 - 100 Corvette fleet near redline everyday for a couple yrs & today's engines are bulletproof. If GM can produce durable engines, I'm sure Mercedes engines can handle a few redline events once in a while...

Just make sure you change the oil on schedule.

I don't think it is a problem at all. I never heard of anyone having problems with a Mercedes V8 - only exception being a friend in Germany - he killed the V8 in his 420 SEL in the 80s. My dad had a 500 SL at that time and he never babied it - ran it full out on the autobahn...no problem at all. I lay into it once in a while - hard to get into it too much without reaching triple digits.

As long as the engine is at normal operating temp, you should be fine. Redlining a cold engine is bad.

These cars were built to be driven on autobahn speeds for long periods. Just enjoy doing it!!

...and make sure the oil is in the safe range on the dipstick prior to putting the hammer down for an extended period on a track or wherever. Do not run on low oil at high RPM.

I would think how the engine was broken in and regularly driven would play a big role. If it had never been driven hard over a long period of time you could expand the connecting rods out a bit and cause the pistons to reach up into the cylinders and hit bits of cylinder wall deposits.
