How to disable door chime

There is little doubt that Mercedes-Benz is second only to Microsoft in forcing useless and annoying features on their customers.

For example, on my 2011 E350: I turn off the engine and open the door - it chimes once. Similarly, when opening the door from the outside - it chimes once. No idea why it does it but it is slowly getting on my nerves.

Anyone knows how to turn it off?

Ah come on gents. The problem isn't the chime so much as it's the tone of the chime. It just sounds so out of character for the elegance of the car. It's so jarring by comparison and reminds me much more that something is wrong rather than simply being a notification that I've turned off the car. Candidly, why do I even have it? My car is keyless. What's it notifying me about?

Never even noticed it. Even if I did I would not find anything elegant or not about a door chime. Seriously who the hell says the door chime isn't elegant enough?!

As far as what's it notifying you about, if you look at the cluster you would see it's telling you to make sure you take the key when you exit the vehicle. People leave keys in the cup holders or storage compartment, especially after leaving a place where the vehicle was valet parked. Get over it!

I had to check my car if it actually chimes. It does!!! I never noticed because I have been driving these cars since 1983 and it becomes like breathing, it's natural.

I now only notice things that don't work. You should do the same, it will give you time to worry about things that actually matter.

100% agreed. It's like damn dude, you drive a damn Benz which many people only wish they could ever own. Be grateful that life has put you in a position to own such a beautiful car and appreciate what you have. Stop worrying about such silly little things and enjoy your success. You could be driving a Corolla instead.

As I've said before, everything is controlled by a computer, so it really doesn't make any sense why they don't allow us to program these features. Some people like a beep every time they open a door, and obviously others don't. Let us pick if we want silence or not so we can all be happy.

Man don't be ridiculous. You sound so stupid. It's one little beep when you turn the car on and off. Get over it. Next you'll be complaining that the door latch makes a noise when you pull the handle or that the radio makes sound. If this seriously makes you that unhappy then you need to reevaluate your life or save up more money to get a better car with a better chime sound.

Thanks for your valuable input. Clearly people don't like that it makes this sound, as a Google search will tell you. As to the radio, I think people would like the backup camera to work while the radio is off. For the doors, it would be nice if they locked when I walked away. Being 6'5" I don't have a lot of options for cars, and working in IT, I realize how trivial it is to program things to make people happy. I don't think anyone is saying they lose sleep over this feature, but if everyone had your attitude we would still be living in caves.

Personally, I like to worry the big stuff while sitting in my cave trying to figure out how to get the AC to run better in the north east corner.

PS Sorry some of us were having a little fun with you.

Being 6'5" you have plenty of options to chose from. There is a great number of cars the size of the E-Class and bigger, not to mention SUV's. You could even chose a smaller car. I worked for BMW and there were many customers your height that drove Z3's and Mini Coopers. Why are you victimizing yourself over a little chime sound? If everyone had your attitude then people with actual real life problems would never get the attention they actually need. You people and your first world problems...

If I could cure AIDS and world hunger with a few lines of computer code, I would. This has nothing to do with first world problems, it has to do with people being able to customize things how they want. Do you think the programmers at Mercedes are working on the cure for cancer when they're not writing code for the car, and that making it so users can personalize how their cars respond takes away from some far more noble effort? People who own iPhones have to put up with the fact that they get the environment that Apple wants them to have. Google realizes they can make a lot of people happy by allowing them to personalize the phone how they want. If Mercedes could make a few people happy with a few lines of code, why wouldn't they?

Plenty of options for tall people? Not a chance. Most trucks and SUVs (assuming I wanted a bigger car) have less leg room than sedans, despite what the specifications say. Compare the leg room in the Ford Fusion against the E class and the Fusion wins. Sit in them and you'll realize it's all a lie.

Dude who cares about all that ****?! You're just rambling on about nothing. That fact remains that it's a stupid little chime noise meant to be a convenience and you're crying about it. Get a life. You speak of curing cancer. A person that actually has cancer would read your complaint and shake their head in shame. I'm not saying you're wrong for being annoyed by the chime. But to actually be so upset about it to vent in an online post and compare it to microsofts bloatware is just extremely feminine! Just saying!

When it comes to cars, yes. We all know women (especially our wives) are always complaining about something minute related to the car! Again, just saying!

Wow, I can't believe the incandescent rage emanating from people towards someone who has commented on the chime. Contrary to your vitriol, it IS the little things that matter. That's why Apple was able to convince people to buy an iPhone for a much larger profit margin than comparable android devices. He focused on ALL the little things and just ensured that they all worked well together (well, at least relative to Androids...and this is coming from an Android fanatic).

The thing about the beep is that it just sounds like crap...to some folks. If the beep was 10x louder to REALLY remind you, would it be okay to complain about it then? Hell, I've read in these forums all of the 'trivial' cr@p that people fixate on and that's part of the beauty of the forum. Everyone can focus on their interests. For markgm's part, if you don't agree with him, fine. Then move along. If you know how to mute the bing, then lend him a hand. But to hound him, and indirectly me, for paying special attention to ALL of the features of our cars is symptomatic of pure discourtesy. We're all fanatics here....that's why we WASTE our time on the forum searching for answers to mundane issues. I'm surprised you even bought a Mercedes. Wouldn't a Hyundai have gotten you from point A to point B? Or, perhaps you just wanted to show off the star?

PS - you may want to ream the OP here as well; they are commenting on the whoosh coming from the airmatic suspension when they turn off the car.

Apple has nothing to do with anything. You both sound like a pair of sissies!

And the guy with the air suspension sound, at least the most recent thread, was concerned that something was actually wrong. Once he learned that it is normal, he was cool with it. You two are just being silly. Who are you trying to convince?! I don't care how you try to spin it or what ridiculous analogies you try to make to cell phones and terminal diseases. Just drive the damn car and stop picking apart little **** that the engineers created or go buy a different car! No one held a gun to your head and made you buy the car after you test drove it. Oh, let me guess, you didn't notice the sound when you test drove the car?!

Now that people can customize almost everything on their smartphones and laptops in order to personalize their experience, I am not surprised that folks start looking at their car and think why can't I change that since it is also electronic. I realize that phones and laptops don't have the same operating safety concerns that a car does, but I think it's a matter of time before some functionality like that becomes more prevalent and probably used as a selling point. Not saying that I have an opinion one way or another on the door chime, just that customization is becoming more and more prevalent.

I don't disagree. But that doesn't discount the fact that no one is forced into buying these cars. People should have known when they bought the car that the door chime isn't customizable from the factory. If they didn't know then they should have done the research before handing over their $60k. It's not MB fault. What manufacturers have customizable door chimes anyway???! Even with this point, it's still a petty gripe to have for something 99% of people don't even notice.

People gripe on here about a lot of things. Me included so I try not to judge. If it's not my thing I just move on. What caught my interest in this thread was the concept of customization of the electronics.

You know when someone finally comes out with programmable sounds then all the others will copy that. I know people who jailbreak or flash custom roms on their phones so they can customize to the nth degree. Stock is mostly good enough for me, but I can see how customization is appeals to others. Now attempting some cooked rom on a phone is one thing; hacking the electronics on a car is another. I'll wait until the manufacturer offers it.

Don't get it twisted. The original premise of this post was not about customization. It was to complain about how annoying the barely noticeable door chime is and to compare MB to Microsoft by adding bloatware to the vehicle. Then one of the complainers tried to flip it to being about a lack of customization. But the real deal is that two guys here are making a silly complaint about a harmless noise on a great vehicle they purchased at their own will.

Don't care how any of you try to flip it to be about "electronics" and free will, it's still a petty grievance and you all know exactly what I'm talking about. Don't be naive. It's a god damned door chime for f**ks sake. It makes one sound when you start the car, one sound when you shut it off, and a sound when you open the door. You're talking about 3 seconds of your day listening to this sound and you're sitting here seriously crying about it and debating with me like I'M the crazy one!!!

I think the wonderful little chime adds to the sophistication of the car. I love hearing it every time I get in and out. It sounds so much more elegant than the lengthy and loud beep that you hear in some Japanese cars. But I understand the OP's point of view. It would be even nicer if it was customizable.
