Just bought a 2011 E550 with 2 days left on factory warranty, what should I do?

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all your help with pricing on the 2011 E550 I was looking at. Ultimately ended up putting a deposit down today and the price they gave me was $31,000. Not too bad!

Anyways, I have until 6/6/15 to ask for anything I need done with the factory warranty. They are already replacing all the wood trim as someone had warned me that it looked faded.

Other than that, is there anything I should ask them to do before the factory warranty expires? I'll have the CPO for 3 years but I was curious what ELSE may be covered by factory but not the CPO?

Thanks in advance! You guys have been extremely helpful and if it weren't for everyones enthusiasm regarding the distronic package as well as the excellent highway ride of the E series I probably wouldn't have gone through with it!

Very excited for my new car... should be picking it up on Tuesday.

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ECU dyno tune; EDOK TCU tune; BB intakes; sprintbooster
If there is any fading or clouding of the headlamps they can replace the entire assembly sometimes

Make sure the heated seat works and if you have MB Tex it isn't ripping on the drivers seat.

What's MB Tex ans where would it rip on the drivers seat? I noticed some torn leather on the left side of the drivers seat on the portion of the seat that "grips" you when cornering but they told me that wouldn't be covered under warranty.

Are you talking about something else?

Congrats on the purchase. You mentioned a deposit - are you driving it now or waiting until the wood is done to pick it up? Some of the things you should check will require you driving the car and going over it.

You need to live in this sticky thread - https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...212-sedan.html Read it and check all the things that apply to your model and options.

I went through that thread making notes on everything to check, but I had already been driving mine for a few weeks so there were a few things I knew weren't wrong with my car. Here is the list I ended up with to check further:

https://mbworld.org/forums/5670199-post129.html
LI62.25-P-056043 JUN13 – 212 & 218 deformation of engine compartment soundproofing due to water ingress. Install optimized seal part # 2126280800.

https://mbworld.org/forums/attachmen...dan-049463.jpg

https://mbworld.org/forums/5599592-post114.html
LI91.30-P-054637 – 212 with seat heater (873) up to VIN A703331 lump under seat cushion cover, install modified heat mat.

https://mbworld.org/forums/5599617-post116.html
LI72.00-P-055756 MAR13 – Model 212 & 218 door seal on front & rear door loose, replace doorframe seal.

https://mbworld.org/forums/4998679-post49.html
LI88.20-P-052891 - 212 rear bumper sticks out in area of rear lamp. Bumper experiences thermal expansion mounting rails (fender area) cannot sufficiently hold the bumper in place. If bumper is not equipped with additional latch, it should be replaced. Note since JAN11 bumpers are equipped with additional retaining tab

Due to my own schedule I'm not taking delivery until Tuesday. By the time I get the car the factory warranty will be expired. That's the main reason I'm asking for suggestions as my dealer is fantastic and will have anything I want fixed if I know what to ask for...

Since you bought it just bought it from an MB dealer, you might get goodwill warranty coverage if you notice anything not covered by CPO in the few weeks or so. No gaurantees, but considering they had work to do that kept you from buying before the warranty expired they might give that consideration. But the CPO will cover all the major stuff - just not the trim and appearance stuff.

Another thing to check is this - https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...trol-knob.html

That's probably covered by CPO but why risk it and it's better to get everything correct now so you can enjoy your car from the start.

I haven't mentioned it to them yet... to be completely honest i'm just not that bothered by minor things like that as far as an exterior appearance is concerned. I want the inside to look great because i'll see it so much when i'm driving the car, but the exterior just never worried me on my cars.

I did specifically ask if I can cancel the order upon delivery if there's anything I don't like, so when I go in on Tuesday I will give the car a solid look and see how I feel about it then. I didn't think I was going to pull the trigger on this deal so I had never looked all that seriously.

Well looking at the sale photos in the other thread I noticed a few minor things:

1. in the second to last photo with shows the tread left on the driver front tire, there appears to be an uneven gap between the front bumper and quarter panel. Not sure if there was some minor damage done that could be related to those scrapes in the first photo. While you may not be concerned about all appearance items, dealers have their own detail and body shop guys that can correct stuff like that in no time. You should also inspect the grill up close for any cracks from a minor impact.

2. The seat back pocket on the driver side appears to have a sag in it on the center side you can see kind of see in the photo of the back seat. Heck it could be a shadow, but there are plastic inserts on the inside edges that keep the form and those are prone to snapping. Easy to feel in there and see if intact or not.

3. The last photo of the engine compartment appears to show the deformed soundproofing I mentioned above.

I can't thank you enough for your input, i'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. When I originally mentioned the wood trim they immediately ordered the replacement parts even though I wasn't even that serious about buying at that point... so I think they'll definitely take a look at these things as well.

Don't mention it. Forums like this are indispensible to research and evaluating a purchase. That's why it helpful to post photos and give details so others can advise sharing their experiences.

Glad to know your dealer has been good to deal with. Don't think for a second though that they would have replaced that wood if you didn't buy it. They would have just waited to see if it sold as is to the next person. The wood issue is well documented and the customer has to bring it up per the MB TSB. Funny how yours will get done in a week while others are told there is a backlog of 2-3 months. They see these cars all the time and know the common issues but other than the items listed on their CPO checklist they don't look for anything else.

When I bought mine and brought it to a dealer for a pre purchase inspection, they did not mention the faded wood, deformed soundproofing or another scratched trim piece since it was not on their list. Granted those are not mechanical issues, but two of them were noted in TSB posted in that sticky and they didn't raise the issue.

In a perfect world, the dealer would crawl through your car with a list of all the TSB and check for those issues. But in the real world that is your job. Thankfully konigstiger posts all those so we can check our cars for issues and get them address properly by the dealer before we are out of warranty. There are a lot of items posted there - some of the items can be noticed in a photo while others require you to listen or sounds or notice how it acts while driving. So you won't get to evaluate them all until you have the car.

Make sure you get two (both) keys. You would be amazed how many times a dealer will provide one key. The keys are very expensive ($300+).

All good info, I do want to say one thing regarding the wood trim; they haven't given me an actual timeline. They told me it was ordered, and that i'd get a loaner car when I bring the car in to have it replaced.

I do know that I have a 2-3 day or 500mile timeline to return the car if i'm not happy with it, or so they said.

How about the COMAND software update? Can you Bluetooth music from your phone?

I had 2011 E350 and now drive the 2010 E550 and both cars originally would not do that. They were not built for that function, which was added for 2012 and later models. Hardware in the car works for it but you need software update for it to work correctly.

Yes I tested that. When I bought my current Volkswagen they told me I could play music via bluetooth and I found out 2 hours after everything was done that I couldn't.

It wasn't a deal breaker then but I swore it would never happen again. I tested everything on the test drive and it works perfectly in this car...

Out of curiosity why did you switch from the E350 to E550 and what do you prefer, any advantages in particular?

I actually wanted an E350 but couldn't find one with distronic and this E550 was too perfect in terms of options and color so I went ahead with it. I'd like to hear why you chose the other way around...

My main reason was like yours - get the distronic but after feeling the power of the big engine that alone would have been enough reason to change. Leather seats, ventilated seats, Airmatic...these also came as bonus with it.

Scorched seats in MB Tex from the heaters has been seen here. The seat cover damage is probably nothing but wear and tear and carelessness.
My biggest concern would be with the transmission issues seen here.
Too many for my liking.

My MB Tex seat ripped right in the middle. I noticed yesterday that it is also starting to rip in the corner where the outer where the center part meets the outer part.

I asked earlier but didn't get a clear answer on this, when you guys say "MB tex" what are you talking about?

Nevermind a simple Google search shows it's the fake leather Mercedes uses.

You won't need to worry about that with the E550. It comes with leather seating surfaces. A lot of people like the MB Tex and a significant percentage of the E350's have MB Tex.

I am partial to leather.
