Windshield bottom heated

Just a FYI:

After 4 spiders from rock hits on my windshield I got a bad one that put a big double crack on it. Hit was close to the bottom edge right under the wiper in the middle of the shield.

Had to go replace it, which was done at the SafeLite. They did a good job I think.

They asked me what all features do I have on the windshield as they had to know if they have a replacement and I could not tell other than the lane change / head light switch camera and the rain sensor. They said it probably also has a heater on the bottom edge of it and yes, this was the case. The windshield actually has heated bottom edge, that blacked area under the wipers. You can see this only with the windshield off the car.

Just thought this is interesting. I never need this but folks living in the wintery states sure will benefit from it as it will melt the ice under the wipers.

That's great to know! the feature will definitely be great for me! I really miss the Range Rover windshield that has small coils running through the entire windshield.... It was wonderful! Start the car up, turn it on and within a few minutes even if frozen solid it would come right off.

I don't have an idea how it turns ON. Perhaps it is automatic or works when seat heaters are used? Cannot find anything in the manual.

I have seen full windshield heater only on some Peugeot model in Europe. Thought they only have it...

It really works well. Melts the ice in just a couple of minutes instead of waiting long time for the blower to do it.

I have seen this windshield in a Ford Focus in Europe. The owner was a "car guy " and a driving instructor. Had to look hard to see those minute wavy coils. Nice though.

I think on MB, the function is activated by using the rear window heater, which also heats the mirrors. Presumably it would also heat the lower part of the windscreen.

(I used to have a Peugeot in the UK)
