Comand Failure
Hey All -
Every have this happen to you?
Ready for a drive to Tahoe to show off the E and the 360-degree cameras show only black. Next morning the E's eyes open back up and all is right ...
Park in the sunshine, come back to drive back to Tahoe again and the COMAND is completely black. Hmmm ...
Drop it off at the dealer and they wiggle a wire here and tighten a connection there and all is right again. Happy thoughts. But then the dealer says ... they will order me a new unit to make sure all remains well in E-land.
And I attribute it all to a carefully built relationship with the Service Manager and the Shop Foreman ... 'nuff said.

I use the Distronics feature everyday helping keep me in the lane. It's easy to over-ride and it seems to make the longer drives easier. I recently drove to / from Tahoe and I didn't use it on the twisty highway 50 sections as it doesn't work well on those types of roads. I wonder how well the upcoming automomous cars will do on these types of mountain roads.

Solved
I brought the E back to dealership with the following errors:
1. Distronics Inoperative
2. HOLD brake feature missing from dash display and inoperative
3. Partronics feature missing from dash display and inoperative
4. ECO feature not functioning and inoperative (no response from button)
5. Error message Aux Battery Malfunction
As explained by the shop foreman ... Dealer ended up replacing the Comand unit AND the Aux Battery. Seems the aux battery losing charge dropped voltage throughout systems, causing other malfunctions. Note: During ECO recovery from stop, aux battery takes all the load so the main battery can quickly restart the engine. With a low voltage available to hold the systems up, they got "confused" and caused the errors ... go figure the E needed the aux battery for all of those different systems. Lesson learned. Extended warranty purchase WAS a smart action at purchase.

Having strong batteries in these E Class cars is one of the most important things for their proper operation. All sorts of things go hay wire when the batteries are down on power.

It isn't only the MB E-Class that is highly sensitive to battery weakness. My previous daily driver was a long-term Lexus LS-430 (14+ years). The way it showed it wanted a new battery was to insist on pulling away from a stop in second gear. For some reason, when the battery was below a certain level, one of the transmission solenoids would not initialize properly, resulting in a "lost" gear.
These cars are really complex. They aren't your grandfather's farm-all.
