At first my cynical nature says I smell a rat taking everyone for a ride but then....OP doesn't say what ruined the engine and that amount of miles in such a short time is possible. So to answer the question....yes, $30K is what it is.

Car free at the moment
There are more than a few instances of this engine (om642) failing due to oil sludging. It seems to be much more frequent on the ML and GL trucks. Same basic engine is used in those models, but obviously it works harder there. It appears the oil doesn't always survive the 10k mile change interval, breaks down, sludges, and starves the bearings causing the engine to seize. MBUSA is fitting a larger oil sump on the trucks now - 14 liters! It happens even on cars with lower miles and perfect dealer service records. The one strange thing is the Sprinter (big delivery van) uses this engine too, and I don't find any instances of it failing. I expect MB sold more of these diesels in the Sprinter than in all the passenger cars and trucks combined.

Try googling "Mercedes om642 sludge" and you'll find plenty of reading.

I own a w211 with the om642. Based on oil analysis by Blackstone labs I have been servicing it every 8k miles. The lab was not too thrilled with the condition of the oil after the full 10k.

I have seen where the dealer list price of a long block engine is about $30k, so that number doesn't surprise me. That said, there probably are less expensive options, albeit more legwork will be required.

I guess OP never came back so can we assume this was all made up?

That or he got a second opinion and simply have a few parts replaced. Nevertheless I assume the problem either no longer or never existed.

ok, so I Googled "engine failure bluetec sludge"

the best or somethin'

I am sure sludge has the potential to jam oil solenoid but by then car is worthless anyway.

Me want 300kMi BooTEC... yes!

nope but NEVER go to dealer

find a reputable shop that specializes in MB and go from there

find a used or rebuilt motor

Would take interested party few call to make, but Sprinter forum reports that MB USA is selling rebuild OM642 engines for slightly above $10k and replacement on Sprinter is easier as well
Meaning Sprinter owner can have rebuild mounted for slightly above $15k.
Even this is the same engine model, for each vehicle application it comes with different pipes and different mounts, so those are things that need to be check.
