2012 E550 speed limit
Ran up against the 130 MPH electronic speed limit over the weekend. Car was pulling very hard and had lots of room to run right up until the computer said no. I was surprised it was so low I was expecting 155. Guess I'll have to take the wagon if I want to go any faster.

Nice!!
I've yet to get to the limiter yet. There is a guy who post videos on here quite often who says he does the max daily of 155 but he's from overseas. I'm sure you've seen him around here. I forget his name off top.

Yeah, I think he has had his car to 185 or something ridiculous like that.

Although I've not tested yet any where near the capable top speed of my E550, I did have the speed limiter removed with an ECU tune and "may" have exceeded the 130 MPH default speed limiter.

Which tune do you have? I'm thinking about doing one, but there are so many out there I have no clue where to start. Any issues with yours?

I think it is JMG who posts the videos of high speed running.
Where did this speed test take place? I've never been on a clear enough straight road to even think about taking it up there.

I went with OE Tuning for my ECU tune and have been very pleased with the performance. Check out my thread on this tune - I have dyno results posted. Love it and zero issues (my MPG even increased a bit).

US-cars are limited to 210km/h (130mph). This is also due to tire choice...
Rest of the world has a 250km/h limiter (155mph). You can simply remove the 130mph limiter via DAS (Star Diagnosis) or VEDIAMO. Then the 155mph limiter kicks in.
Without any limiter, both -the M273 5.5 382hp and the M278 4.7 402hp- will run approximately 300km/h (187 mph). You may want to watch the following video. It shows two E550 N/A (382hp). One with the factory (non US) limiter of 155mph. The other one is delimited. Other than that, both are stock!
One is cruising down at 255km/h (155mph), the other one at 300km/h (187mph, GPS verified).

This concerns me about the "tune" - obviously you're getting more HP and better MPG because it's running the engine lean. This kills most engines in the long run.

Longevity / reliability was a concern as well however this was mitigated with feedback from many members on this forum (as well as experiences shared from the tuners) with several years / many miles post tune with little major issues (Stage 1 tune on M278). There's a lot more to these tunes than fuel lean especially on for the Twin Turbo motors. Lots of info on MBWorld across multiple vehicles with same engine that confirms this. Although I've only had my tune less than a year I can definitely report only positive results so far! Best mod I've done!

My wonderful old school mechanic said the 2 wheel drive 2011 version was limited to 155, whereas the 4 wheel drive version was limited to 130 due to longevity concerns with the center differential. If memory serves, there was no 2012 E550 2 wheel drive sedan.

That was nonsense. Both, the E550 5.5 N/A and the E550 4.7 TwinTurbo were available as 4matic and rear wheel drive in the rest of the world. All were limited to 155 mph, except for north america. This is due to tire choice!

So if I've already upgraded the tires... (Evil grin spreading across my face!)
