Tailgate fell off!
I pushed the close button on the tailgate today and I heard an awful noise and the right side had come completely off and out. It won't close and is currently hanging at a weird angle. Taking it in tomorrow, hopefully it's covered by warranty. Any idea what would have caused this? Pin was
sitting loose inside.

Wow, can you get it to close at all? I wouldn't drive it unless it can latch at the bottom. Otherwise it looks like it could fall off. Maybe call for roadside?
Any signs of exterior damage to the back at all?

I would not drive it like that as if you cause more damage to it the warranty might not cover it.

Sheesh WTF happened there? I guess 2 miles is doable if you have no other option. Good luck with that, and let us know how it turns out and what caused this.

Thanks for responding everyone.
So, here is the deal. I have had a lot of trouble with the back end/tailgate/bumper. Apparently, there was some sort of back end damage from the previous owner (I bought used) and the MB dealer in Paramus, NJ sent it over to their body shop (subletted the work) because it was customer pay. This body shop did terrible work, didn't seal the lights, used the wrong trim kit and lastly, did not secure the pin in the hinge. My dealer has been more than nice and fixed a number of items under MB parts warranty but this they could not fix. My service manager seems to think the work would be warranted but I am in Denver, nowhere near NJ. Anyhow, that is what happened, an unsecured pin finally fell out.

Wow unbelievable. Sorry to hear. Had a 2 hour old Cadillac that had the front headlights fall out on the way home from picking the new car up. They were never screwed in. Asked for another car and got it.

Ah that sux. I work in Paramus and pass by the MB Dealer that is on RT 17 in Paramus daily. I assume that's the dealer you bought it from? I have heard about many of the dealers of all kinds getting work done from smaller shops in Paterson or Passaic NJ. Not that they're all bad but IMO many are better at working on ricers etc.
Good luck and I hope it all works out in the long run.
