outside driver's mirror sometimes dark
sometimes only - very dark, almost black. can be day or night. otherwise, when not dark, looks fine.
known fault? cause? should the mirror be changed?
thanks

yes the mirror can be changed but im not sure what the problem is.
is your car tinted?
are you saying the mirror has no reflection and turns completely black even on daytime?
are you sure youre not just seeing the reflection of your car interior from the window?

The outside mirror dims at night along with the inside rear view mirror. it seems however to sometimes dim to the point of being almost black at random times. I cannot see out of it when it does this because it is too dark. it still reflects; again, not all the time. Sometimes it is fine.
This is the same as your interior rear-view mirror - it dims at night.
The car is unmodified. First started to do this about 3 -4 months ago.

If it is under warranty then make the dealer replace it. If not wait until you find a good deal on a replacement

Have someone pull fault codes using MB DAS, but good chance it is the exterior mirror glass since dimming is synchronized with interior mirror that is not affected. Is vehicle equipped with right side dimmable mirror and if so, does it working properly. Post or PM VIN if you need mirror glass part #.

I've noticed the same thing on my car, it only happens to the driver mirror.
It doesn't bother me much so I haven't mentioned it to the dealer but I will the next time I have the car serviced...

If your cars are still under warranty, I'd get this resolved before the warranty expires. Certain driver's side mirror glass part numbers are frightfully expensive to buy (the ones with radar sensors are over $1,000 USD).

Don't know if this is your problem but, on my car, I attached a child observation mirror under the rear view mirror in such a way as to cover the photo sensitive "eye" on the back of the right hand side of the rear view mirror that controls the automatic high beam dimmer ('darkening') system for the rear view and driver's side mirror. Everything worked fine for a while, but one day both the rear view and driver's side mirror went dark during the day as well as night and stayed that way . Dealer fixed it by removing the kid's mirror and resetting the auto dimmer system -- no charge.

I figure between putting 50k/year on the engine and reading here i'll have a brand new car by the time I hit 225k in the next two and a half years

Only the driver side mirror has the "darkening" function. this is because it it a straight glass. Passenger side is a convex mirror that send only a part of the reflected light to you eye.

Automatisch abblendende Spiegel
Warnung

Yeah I have two and a half years left on my warranty... that's half the reason I frequent this forum so often is to find out stuff like this and have it fixed before warranty expires.

If not you should fix it ASAP.

I've noticed the driver side mirror darkening too much before with the auto dim feature. It is rare and normally due to headlights behind me (working as it should I guess so I don't get blinded by some truck). But it does make it harder to see the next lane. So I just turn my head when changing lanes.

It's the primary reason I purchased Mercedes over a BMW/Audi.
I was never a big Mercedes fan but due to the warranty I bought one and I've fallen in love!
