4MATIC owners running staggered wheels, tire size help
Hi, what are 4MATIC owners running for tire sizes on a staggered setup? i'm thinking about running 19x8.5 and 19x9.5. any issues?

I thought the same thing. AWD systems usually need to have all 4 wheels the same size and about the same degree of wear or they can have issues in how they split torque from front to back.

As long as the tire diameter between the front and back does not exceed .02 you are fine. Bear in mind your tire selection is limited however.

Also depends on the offset of the wheel you're selecting...
scroll lower to a topic "winter shoes off" you should see my 19 set up. My is a rear wheel drive car however.

Running staggered set up on second E550 4Matic with no issues. As long as overall size of rim plus tire is within 5% you'll be fine. E63s are 4Matics!
Tire size ( ideal):
F: 245/35/19
R: 285/30/19

Optimal wheel sizes:
F: 19x8.5 ET 40
R: 19x10 ET 45.
Front wheels will sit flush, rear wheels you can go to ET52, will still look great!
I have a brand new set of Forgestar wheels for sale,, by the way for E550.

Wether staggered wheels are allowed by Mercedes depends on the transmission. Cars with 7g-tronic (in Germany all M273 E550 5.5) must not use staggered wheels. However, cars with 7g-tronicPlus (in Germany all M278 E550 TT) can use them! They even come with them from factory (19" in the E-class, 18" & 19" in CLS class). The main difference is the transfer gearbox.

So which box do we have here in the states?
Above I said I would run square but last night I found a set of Vossens VF083 20" staggerd for a price I could not pass up. Just need to get rear tires for them.
Fronts are 245/35 so I will look for 285/30 correct?

I'm running this staggered setup on a 2010 E550 4MATIC Do you guys think I'm ok? From what I was told by calling several tire shops, the difference between my fronts and rears are minimal so it should not be an issue?
245/40/18 - front
255/40/18 - rear
245/40/18 - front
255/40/18 - rear

2013 E550 4Matic
I have 235/35/20f on 9" wide wheels and 275/30/20r on 10.5" wide wheels, and the person I bought them from (on here) had them on his E550w4 for over a year with no issues. I hope to have the same experience as him. The outer diameter difference between these two are 0.01" so that's what I would go for (if you have 20" wheels, can't say for 19")

I am not sure. I do believe (which means: I am not 100% certain), that the OM652, OM641 LS, the M276 and the M278 engine came exclusively with the 7g-TronicPlus or the 9g-Tronic. That is at least as it is over here.
Mercedes Germany uses the following tire-size on 4matic cars (W212 / C218) equipped with 7g-TronicPlus, 9g-Tronic or the MCT:
245/45 R17 all around (250 and 350 only)
245/40 R18 all around (except for C218 and 63)
255/40 R18 all around (all C218 and W212 E63)
255/40 R18 & 285/35 R18 (all C218 and W212 E63)
245/35 R19 & 275/30 R19 (W212 only, not for 63)
255/35 R19 & 285/30 R19 (all C218 and W212 E63)
This is what definitely will work with the 7g-TronicPlus as it is available from factory. So to answer your question: I would go with 275/30 R19.
One small side note: by using staggered wheels, understeer will unfortunately increase.

To minimize understeer, one could use front wheels with a smaller offset! I am using the following setup
rear: 9.5 x 19 ET 48 (equal to stock)
front: 8.5 x 19 ET 35.5 (stock would be 48)
So the front axle is wider with my setup (SL R231 wheels) which reduces understeer significantly.

I am running 235/35/19 and 265/30/19 with 4matic with no issues. Used to have 245/30/20 and 275/30/20 with no issues too.

I had 20" staggered wheels (20x9 and 20x10.5) on my 4matic e550 with no issues. 235/35/20 yields a 26.47" diameter and 275/30/20 a 26.49" diameter. It is a negligible difference. Kept my fronts at 2 psi higher air pressure to compensate for weight. I don't see any difference between this and the stock square 18" I have on now that are at 35psi front and 38psi rear per recommended pressures found on gas tank cover. If anything my current setup is more of a danger to the AWD system than my 20s were. Since I ended up keeping my car I'm ordering another set of 20s with same tire sizes and diameters as before. The 275/30 on the 10.5 wheel gives a bit of a stretch and allows a little less tire to make contact with road....almost matching the contact the front tire makes with pavement. Call me crazy but I think these are the "safest" sizes.
