Motor oil...from zee Germans.

I went to my 'guy', he does German car service, as an indie. I trusted him with my 540 for years, and now that I have the wicked technical and high performance E550, I will be taking it to him for sure. I don't hate the dealership world, but I appreciate the small business mentality.

Okay...to the point - I stopped in and he gave this outline of products and specifically recommended an oil for the 229.5x MB oil.

From LIQUI MOLLY, a 5W-40, called Leichtlauf.

Thoughts? I really enjoy motor oil and technical oil conversations.

It meets the spec. How much does he want per quart or container for it? I think I bought the Mobil 1 0w40 for around 23 in the 5 quart size last time I changed it last year. Why does he advocate this brand over everything else?

I see nothing wrong with that oil if it is reasonably priced and meets the MB spec. I put Castrol 0W40 Edge Syntec European Formula in my E350. It meets Mercedes Benz 229.5 and it's also made in Germany. I bought them in 5 quart jugs from Amazon for about $23 each.

There's a recent thread about this oil at the bobistheoilguy site, complete with VOAs. Interesting the LIQUI MOLLY Leichtlauf doesn't contain any Moly according to the VOA.

hummm...interesting about the CASTROL EDGE made in Germany - that smacks of a relabel - which is fine by me.

The Garage offers 5L + filter at 69$...any additional oil at extra cost, so about 100 bucks for an oil&filter change for my E550 - 8L required.

Castrol Edge goes on sale for about 40bucks for 5L up here in Canada, I just need to fine the right one MB229.5 compliant.

I will google the Leichlauf and see what I can find. ALSO, thanks for the link Six_Speed.

cheers

I think Mobil 1 0w40 is also a pretty popular oil. There's a $12 rebate on a 5 quart jug. While Walmart isn't listed as a participating retailer, they've always accepted them in the past. It's about $25.47 for a 5 quart jug there so after the rebate, it's $13.47. Limit is 2 so you'll have enough for a full oil change. Only in US though.

Thanks!!! I'll definitely be using the Mobil 1 rebate.

Nothing but Mobil 1 in my cars, 0w40 for Benz. Wal-Mart is cheap enough even without this big rebate.
