Spring shield

So after some miles of driving with my 245/35/20, offset 40 my front right tire has been rubbing on the spring shield. It is really close and didn't rub at first but now for some reason it is. I don't want to add a spacer because the wheel already is flush with the fender.

My question is, can I hammer the crap out of it or grind it to give it more space?

I heard some of you have "modified" the shield but not sure how or what you did.

Thanks

if you can, change to 245/30/20 or 225/35/20.

This picture is from your much earlier thread when you stated that fronts are 20x9 et32, at which time you said there were no rubbing. What is the width of your current front wheels (with et40) and post a current picture to compare to above posted.

Then I messed up originally, offset was always 40. Width of the tire is still 245. The weird part is that when I first put them on, there was no rubbing and I rode like that for at least 1000 miles. On a long 3 hour trip is when it started rubbing, and it only rubs on the right side, not the drivers side

Then I do not understand how it was even possible not to rub from day one, when using 245/35-20 tire on 20x9 et40 wheel on non-airmatic W212. I tried 245/35-20 on several different 8.5" wide wheels from offset of as low as et30 all the way up to as high as et40 - every time tire was in firm contact with that shield (mine is 2014 E550, but I tried with the same results on 2010, 2012 and 2014 E350). Only E550s with airmatic do not have that shield, so they fit (barely, but no rubbing).

ive got 20x9 ET 35 on the front with 245/30. couple of days ago when im looking for new tyres, we tried 245/35 (to get better load rating tyres) but it doesnt fit. 235/35 will barely fit but 245/30 is perfect. (at least for my offset)

tyres generally expand as they get hotter but like threeMBs, i dont understand why you didnt rub on day 1 and on just 1 side.

Maybe a hammer ? to go to town on that spring shield ?

Seems like the easiest and less damaging solution would be to run 245/30 tires. You can sell your used ones to a tire shop and get credit towards new ones.
