2013 E350 Bluetec
Gurus, new user, need your advise.

Hi Gurus,

Thank you for putting this group together and I believe this is where the real talent lies.

I have been a TDI driver for so many years and I still have a 2002 VW Jetta and Beetle. The Jetta has crossed 270,000 miles and the Beetle has crossed 170,000 miles so far happy with those cars. Just yesterday I got into (purchased from private seller) 2013 MB E350 Bluetec (AMG model) and visited dealer to get the inspection sticker and noticed some oil leaks.

The dealer thinks that my vehicle has 2 leaks, 1) coming from the oil cooler 2) the intake seal (they said it was previously replaced by someone and they didn't do it right). Gurus, no worries. I am still under warranty and it will be fixed without emptying my wallet

Now my questions are,
1) First day after buying this vehicle, I was surprised to these issues. Is this common with these cars? How often do I see these oil leaks?
2) Do I have to ask them to replace any other non-expensive items such as seals and etc while they are at it?
3) How do I ensure that the dealer has done a good job?

I am planning to do fuel, engine, air filter replacements and oil changes. What oil should I use? and I appreciate any recommendations on where to buy the parts and etc. Also, any DIY links would be great as well.

Please throw anything at me because I need to do lot of reading to be a guru like you guys. Thank you and much appreciated.

I'm guessing he has a sport with package SA Code 772, AMG styling package-front spoiler and side skirt. He also may have upgraded AMG 19" wheels.

As far as oil, to each their own of course...and you have the Bluetec. But I use Mobil 1 0W40 European Car Formula for my gasoline engine.

Can't help you with the leaks - I don't have any experience with mine and I don't have the Bluetec. Hopefully they fix properly (they should, especially under warranty) and you have no future issues. How many miles do you have?

I bought my air filter on Amazon - Fram had a good one on there that was Prime. Amazon also has oil filters, or you can grab some at your dealer.

Thank you for the reply. No it didn't have 19 inch AMG wheels, I wish I had them (they are sharp looking). It has 36000 miles and few more months warranty left.

I guess we use same oil for both bluetec and gasoline engines?

Be sure you know the locations of the leaks so you can do visual inspections after the repair work to be sure they don't return. I would also check the sticky on bulletins and look for ones specific to your model. Best to look at those while you have a few months of warranty left so they items can be fixed on their dime.

I have a different model with 3X that miles of yours but I also had a small oil leak at the back of the engine housing. I forget the exact name of it but I have it on my last print out. It was insignificant and I honestly couldn't even see it. I had two SA advise me of it and one tried to up sell while the other said it's not a concern at all. If I was under warranty like you I would've gotten it taken care of regardless.

I'm guessing your have the AMG styling package with front spoiler and side skirt? I have that as well as the AMG Double Spoke wheels but I only have 18s.

I had to have oil cooler seal replaced on my 2008 E320 BT at 56k. MBUSA picked up the tab for it.

That's not bad. You probably had orange seal and we know they are problematic and the new purple seals are improved ones. 2013 (which is mine) should have purple ones but then it leaked. Go figure..

The oil spec for Diesel is different than gasoline. I think most diesel people end up using a 5w40 oil. Just make sure it meets MB specs. Cheapest oil right now is Mobil 1 which has a $12 rebate through the end of May for a 5 quart jug, limit 2.

As for your AMG model, it's basically the AMG package. If it were the AMG model, that would be the E63.

Pay attention to this. If you use the wrong specification oil it could turn to mush and seize the engine.

This is all very simple. USE THE OIL SPECIFIED IN THE OWNERS' MANUAL. That is 99% of it. Whether you use a 0W vs 5W or which brand you choose is of much less import.

Diesels typically require MB229.51, and gasoline engines 229.5.
