Loud ticking/tapping on startup
On my 2013 e350, sometimes on startup a loud ticking/tapping noise but only when it starts. It sounds fine after. It doesn't happen on each start though. Only at random, when the weather is colder it happens more often on the start.
I recently changed my oil, used mobile 1 formula m. No change in noise.
What I can tell you is that the idiots who had the car before me (used car dealer) most likely didn't service the oil.
Some people say it's lifters, some say oil pressure etc. I know this community is solely benz owners so im hoping someone has had and delta with this simular situation.
Appreciate the feedback in advance.

Funny you mention, this is an identical recent development on my 12 E350. The vehicles has been dealer serviced per manual since new. I have been looking around to see if anyone else reporting the same issue on the forum. I am now out of warranty and it doesn't do it every cold start so it would be tough to demonstrate to service dept. however I will mention it at next service but doubt it is anything easily serviceable. Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Some people have told me after an oil change it would go away, but nothing has changed. I have a friend who's going to try to diagnose it for me. Ill let you know what the discovery is.

Is it different than the typical direct injection ticking these cars have? At least I am assuming the 12's have it. My 13 E550 does it, as does my wife's 14 GLK350. Some mornings (usually on a colder morning) it seems a bit more audible and then it mellows out, just like you mention.

I'm sure it is, I've heard a brand new almost zero mileage start and Mercedes-Benz are usually quiet machines on start, I've been thinking about giving it a fuel treatment on my next fill but don't know what stuff is safe to use. And for your wifes GLK, bad *** choic . It's a very nice car, i think that's the South class of SUVs

Maybe the new new ones ironed this out, but like I said, my 13 and her 14 do what you are describing. We've got ~25k on hers and over 40k on mine (I bought it CPO).

I had the same issue back 8 months ago on my CPO 2012 E350 and did a search and its your timing chain tensioners. The tapping noise occurs at start up when cold and at times after a drive and the car cools, then it would make the sound for about 5-8 secs. Went to the dealer told them about the TSB and the they already knew about it. It was replaced and now the noise is gone.

What was the cost to fix it?
