Is excessive engine oil that bad for your engine?
Hi E class & other Mercedes drivers, I just came up with quick question.
I am aware that excessive engine oil is not good for your engine, especially for the crank, pan, valve, etc.
I made a stupid mistake by adding too much engine oil, about a quart.
Right now, my dipstick reads that the oil is slightly above the MAX. I checked it 4-5 times and the oil is reaching above the red plastic indicator about 1 cm, to the string part of the dipstick.
Should I need to top off some excessive oil? or is this amount fine? As of now everything is going well. No noise or rough rpm.
Any advice is highly appreciated! Thanks.

Yes. Remove it to be safe.

The oil level in the pan is intended to be just below the crank shaft journals when the engine is running. When there is too much oil, the spinning journals hit the oil and make the oil frothy with air. The problem is that oil with air lubricates less effectively and you loose a little power pushing the excess oil around with the crankshaft. Being a little low on oil is not harmful but being over can cause problems. Modern oil contain additives to help with froth but they get used up over time.

I don't know if this is related, but once when I had my VW Passat 3.6 4motion wagon in for service, the dealer over filled the oil, and the very next day I noticed oil all over the engine compartment. Brought it back to the dealer and they said the over filled oil caused oil to leak through the head gasket. So they drained the oil, replaced the head gasket, cleaned up engine compartment (best they could) and refilled to the proper level. I drove that car for another 20k miles without any engine issues and would still be driving it today if it didn't get totaled in an accident.

Cars come with dipsticks for a reason (and I know M-B eliminated them for a short while).
Those that say overfilling is a non-issue should just keep pouring in oil until it reaches the top of the fill neck like your windshield washer fluid. See how that works for you.
