Front brake pads and Rotors -E550 2011
Hello
I am a new member to this forum, this is my first post...
i bought a used 2011 e550 4matic last year (odo right now 45K) and having issues with my brakes... i.e. when i hit the brakes the steering wheels vibrates...so i took my car to a certified mechanic...he recommended replacing the brake pads and rotors...although the brake pads are not worn out..
he mentioned that e550 with sport package has this known issue with front brake pads...and quoted me $565 for replacing the pads with new original ones...
i tried to call few other places the pricing is around 550-600$ for replacing brake pads and rotors..
i would like to know if i can somehow buy the parts online or at napa or autozone and just give them the labor charges...
can someone recommend where to buy the original brake pads and rotors? i feel the price quoted by mechanic is too much...
i live in chicago suburbs..would appreciate if someone can also recommend a mechanic

I just got my pads replaced a few months ago. Luckily, my rotors were in good shape so they didn't need replacement. I just got the pads at the shop that were available with sensors.

Thanks .. i will look into the link... i thought i was the only one facing this issue...vibration is very scary on highways... dont have complete control and confidence on braking....

The rotors are warped and need to be replaced along with new pads. You can buy the parts and do the work yourself or with a knowledgeable friend. A shop would not be very receptive to installing parts that you supply, only because of their liability insurance requirements. If the part failed, you can see it may get messy with one party blaming the other. I cannot recommend Burdi Motorworks in Schiller Park highly enough for being a top notch independent Mercedes Benz shop. The work is done right the first time with your safety in mind. If you are trying to shop the cheapest price for this work I have no one else to recommend. You bought a Mercedes Benz, and you either need to get good at DIY if you want to save money or find the best shop and take care of the car properly.

I would read some of these for advice. Personally, mine has some vibration but it is barely noticeable for now. And I will be looking into ceramic pads or some non-OEM alternative as the brake dust is obscene on the fronts.

just spoke to Burdi Motorworks in Schiller Park and setup an appointment tomorrow to replace pads and rotors...
this is my first MB..thought German cars were tougher than Japanese ...

Just know that almost all places won't warranty parts you buy yourself. If you still experience vibrations they won't help you. They'll just blame you for buying the parts yourself :P

My friend has e550 with same issue. He ended up replacing rotors and pads at dealer. I believe this is rather common problem. Maybe it has something to do with staggered wheels in the rear.

If it is MB parts be ready to have the job done again in a rather short driving distance that probably just barely exceeds the warranty you receive from the shop. If you are outside warranty, as I believe, you do not need to use MB parts. There are a lot better rotors and pads available for similar or much less cost.
For pads I can say that I changed mine for the second time just 2 weeks ago. The first replacement full ceramic pads I got from AutoZone 4 years ago with life time warranty. Took the worn out pads back and got a new set for free. They would have cost only $53 and I can say they work extremely well especially being so low cost.
My rotors are fine and I have to believe that MB changed the rotor maker somewhere between 2009 - 2011 as it seems the most rotor issues are with cars 2011 - 2012. Mine was actually made in summer of 2009.
Ask the shop if they would install something other than MB parts for you.

I have a 2011 E350 bluetec diesel, same car but I am sure the pads and rotors are somehow different.
I had the same issue at 90,000 miles, my MB dealer charged me $730 for fronts and $581 for rears, less a 10% coupon.
I shopped all the independent garages and the dealer was either the best or very close to the best price, so I went with them.

What parts is this shop going to use?

so i got new rotors....there is no pulsing...however i am concerned regarding old pads... should i also replace pads even though they are good? if yes should i get the OEM since the rotors are from MB ?

How are those pads from autozone? still working out well? no issues?

I got mine at brakeperformance.com, did them myself in about an hour, really easy to do, I think I paid $260 or so for rotors and pads. Been using this site on all my cars, so far about 6 cars and never an issue with their products.

Hi all, to tell you the truth owned 4 mercedes bens 99 Ml320, 99 E320, 11 E350 and 94 S500 they all have the shake in the steering wheal. Even when i put new rotors and pads they always had a little shake when you just start driving without even using brakes, after few min goes away and its shaking when braking. As you put some miles on the brakes it does it more, I just wonder why. This 2011 E350 i got now i did new rotors, pads everything was cleaned very nice and gressed, new tired new rims even new tpms sensors. still getting shakes. Just weird. I wonder if anyone got a solution for that???!!
And yes, very easy to do all the work on your own brakes need few basic tools and you can even check youtube how to, without paying the dealer that big buck. I do my own brakes all the time and try to use ceramic pads.
