If you had not gotten a W212

What would you likely drive?

For me, probably a 535i.

2014 E350 also restored: 1969 Camaro convertible SS 1957 Chevy Belair 2dr hardtop
Cadillac CTS 6 cylinder which was about $10,000 more than my E350 when we were looking. The caddy had less leg room and a smaller trunk. With the added cost and less room it was a no brainer to get the E350

My 2nd place cars were: 2013ish S4 (impressive) 2010-13ish CTS-V wagon (amazing but no awd), 2013 GS350 awd (slow), 2013 LS460 awd (slow lux pig) and keeping my old car (boring).

If I were looking today and the E/CLS550 was out of the question, I'd add a S6 to the mix.

I spent more time looking at the A6 than the S6. Maybe I should have given the S6 some attention, but I just assumed based on pricing that the S6 was meant to go up against the AMG and M lines. Same with the CTS-V. But if you were considering the higher performance engines they offered, I think you made a good choice with the E550.

2012 e350, a BMW, an Audi, a Camaro
I cross shopped the GS350 AWD and they are great handling cars and decent interior and crazy good reliability but I dont like the exterior styling.

I drove the CTS and it handled really well but the interior quality was really bad. There were tons of creaks and moans coming from everywhere.

I have the A6 3.0T and its a very comparable car. It handles a bit better and the interior is a bit more up to date. The MB is a bit more serene of a cruiser and I like the exterior styling quite a bit.

I have a BMW for my wife because she really likes them but I dont like their steering nor their interiors that much and the reliability has been a bit of a pain in all that I have owned.

I'd consider the 2017 E class next I think. I was in one last week and it really is a nice place to be.

Mike

Since i was looking for luxury diesel sedan, and Audi and VW cannot sell diesel vehicles in the US currently, my only choices were the E 250 and the 535d. Even though the 535d was faster it was a terrible car. The 535d feels like you are driving a 7 series because it feels so big and awkward and is not a comfortable ride.

Would have kept my 2008 Infiniti G35. That was a great car. 5 years not a single issue. And it was fast. But I wouldn't trade my E now. Spoiled me

Like others, a 3.0 A6. I chose the E350 because of better styling and the E350 CPO was about $5K less expensive than a comparable year/mileage A6

CPO CLS550 or possibly a CPO BMW.

I will never buy an Audi. They are just horrible for reliability. I know so many people who have had nothing but trouble with theirs I won't even consider one. My wife had a VW once and it was absolute garbage.

I rented an A6 a few months ago and was thoroughly unimpressed by it.

I owned a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T which spent 4 months at the dealer during the 4 years that I drove it. I got rid of it just before the warranty expired. Leaking rear window, window falling in drivers door, broken wiring harness that caused intermittent miss on one cylinder, two catalytic converters, and on and on.

I had a 2006 A4 that had many....many issues. That said, the way Audi USA treated me (bought back the car, no issues) I'd give them another shot. My previous Infiniti's have treated me well. But, German cars drive a bit differently.

A friend of mine has an A4 he bought brand new a few years ago. Within the first 40k miles he had to have the transmission replaced and Audi put in a used transmission. That transmission has since failed. This is a guy who is a die hard Audi guy. He had another one prior and it was in the shop more than he drove it. He would show up at work every 3-4 weeks with a loaner car which he would sometimes have for months.

By the way, that A6 I rented we couldn't open the trunk so that stopped us before we even left the rental garage (the key fob wouldn't open it, the button on the trunk lid wouldn't open it and the interior release wouldn't open it). They gave us another A6 which worked fine for the week we had it but it had literally no options. No backup camera, no satellite radio, no NAV. This is a $50,000 car and it doesn't have NAV or a backup camera? WTF? I rented a $25k Buick Verano a few weeks later that was better equipped, it had a backup camera and satellite radio.

Oh, one more thing that irked me about the Audi. You have keyless start but you have to fish the key fob out of your pocket and press buttons on it to lock and unlock the doors? Unforgivable.
