Gas mileage - new owner

e350 4Matic all city driving - 17 - 17.5 mpg. And I thought my BMWs 335 and 328 were bad at 18.5 . Of course, e350 is a much heavier vehicle.

With 4Matic it sounds about right for city driving.

Why does it say 20 mpg in the city then? I don't think it's humanly possible to attain unless driving down the hill

City driving is a mythical criteria and not reflective of most(any?) cities. Some people probably do better due to level travelling, fewer stops, ability to travel at 45 MPH for long distances, etc. Time of day and day of week will effect your MPG.
The way you drive also has a tremendous impact.

On my 2013 E350 4matic wagon, it's rated for 19/27 (city/hwy). Around town I average around 17mpg on a full tank. that's lots of stop and go driving, and the OBC shows average speeds in the upper teens to lower 20's.

On long highway trips, if I can manage to keep speeds between 65 and 70mph, I can get 30 to 31 mpg. If I get to 75 to 80mph then I average around 28mpg. Still exceeding the epa estimate.

I'm happy with the mileage (both city and highway) I get given the size, weight, and power of the wagon.

These are heavy cars. You have to make use of the momentum that you generate. They will coast forever if you let them. I have been averaging 25 mpg with my 2010 4matic 30/70 city / highway. Remember every time that you apply the brakes you are throwing away fuel.

In my '11 E350 4M I was getting around 18-19 with suburban driving... in my current '13 E550 4M I get the same, but I have heavy wheels (Vossen) on it. With the OEM AMG wheels I get about 21mpg and can get up to 34 highway. Best I ever got on the '11 was 28 all highway. The new direct injected engines are amazing lol

Yeah, in my 2014 E350 4matic I am averaging 18-19 mpg in hilly suburban driving and hit about 29 mpg on the highway for longer trips at 70-80 mph. I was disappointed with those averages given the rating for the car but, given the experiences related here, I suppose that's about average. El Cid stresses that the government mpg ratings on which we base our expectations are somewhat, if not completely, misleading and inapplicable to 'real' day to day driving.

Way too many variables. I get about 18 or maybe less in my "city driving." But then my city has a population of 4,500 and 90% of my trips are within 3 miles, but require stopping at least four times at traffic lights or stop signs. Max. speed is 35 MPH, if that.
That's why I really do not pay attention to it.
Best higway has been 32 MPG at 65 MPH on interstate (slightly hilly), using cruise control and not using AC.

That is good. I live out in the suburbs I do not think I have been in Chicago in 20 years which is about 30 miles away. They shoot people on the expressway or just sitting in your car or on your porch. More Killed in Chicago each weekend than in New York and LA combined. More people killed each day than soldiers killed each day when I was in Vietnam. Bad place to go.

Be thankful you don't have a E550 if you like good mileage! I get 13 in the city if I'm lucky! I get 28 or more on long highway runs but in town is awful. I guess you pay to play!

I don't think so. For me the biggest variable is tire pressure (I went from 35 to 39 psi on 18" wheels w/ stock tire size) and driving style. I cut back on stop light acceleration and try to keep a constant speed to maximize mpg. I drive my 5 year old daughter around a lot and she rats me out to the boss on a regular basis.

When I drive the '14 E350 like my C55 AMG I get 16 mpg burbs, 18 to 19 highway.

I found the ride unpleasantly harsh at 39 - 40 psi. This is very different from the stiff ride in sport package BMW e90s I had before

2014 350 with 30,000 miles, using Mobile 1 0-40, warm Summer weather with ac on, tire pressures as speced in the owners manual. Six five hour trips to Maine this year at the posted speed of 70 mph.33.8 - 34.2 mpg. That's some great engineering for a heavy car.

Get the Bluetec if you want mileage. I get about 25 in town, about 40 on the highway. And with 400 Ft-Lbs of torque there is not anything to whine about in pulling power.

I don't pay much attention to my MPG in urban driving. I figure it's going to be lousy. I can get 30 MPG plus on long highway drives, and that's fine with me. For what it's worth, my E350 4Matic gets better gas milage than does another car I own, a 2009 Honda Accord V6- both city and highway.

It's all better than a 1973 Pontiac I owned that had a 400 CID 4 barrel engine. 13-15 mpg ON THE HIGHWAY!

I experimented a bit and tried to feather the accelerator pedal and coast as much as possible with a pretty impressive result: 19.8 instead of 17-17.5.

Not sure I can do it for a long period of time though

I actually started liking the car quite a bit. The only thing I still can't get used to is zero feedback overboosted steering

I did not reset one of my trip computers for about 1,500 miles. Got 26 MPG. Some, but not a lot of long trips.
I live in a very small town and I get about 20 MPG normally for "city" driving. I can drive four blocks, stop, drive four more blocks, reach my destination. Then drive same to another destination or return home. May drive a little more sometimes.
May have mentioned before that best MPG was 32 on interstate at 65 using cruise and with AC off.
Usually get about 26 mixed city and highway.

Is that dash indicated or hand calculated ? My car always exaggerates by about 2-3 mpg. It always indicated 36-38 combined but in reality its doing about 34-35 mpg. So you might really be getting about 16 mpg if the dash shows 17.5.

I've averaged over 40 (blended overall city/highway) in the first 5000 miles since I bought the E250 Bluetec.
